Kia Orāna I hope you are keeping warm this week with the wintery blast. I am in Wellington this week at the AP/DP conference where CATE President—Craig Dyason and myself presented. It was great to have the opportunity to speak to senior leaders and talk about the NELP—Future of Learning and Work and how we can better deliver a school wide career education programme to all ākonga. As discussed, alongside the Careers System Strategy there is a need for a career education framework that progressively develops career management competencies. We have an amazing opportunity at this year's conference to have a look at the career education framework developed in New Brunswick, Canada—check out the details below. It is Halls of Residence time, so we have included a number of resources to support you in this work. I’m also looking forward to seeing those that can make it next week for the Aquaculture online webinar. There will be a number of different young people talking about their different roles in the Aquaculture industry—see the details below. Please forward the registration link to science teachers and to your student and parent community. Meitaki, Leigh Gray |

Conference Updates We are very excited to welcome Tricia Berry from the Ministry of Education in New Brunswick, Canada to the CATE NZ 2023 conference. Tricia will be with us in person and Anthony Mann (OECD) will join us virtually to present the following keynote—From research to practice: how New Brunswick is integrating insights from longitudinal analysis into K-12 career development. This session focuses on the integration of research into policy and practice. It explores the ways in which the Canadian province of New Brunswick has drawn on longitudinal analysis undertaken within the OECD Career Readiness project to enhance guidance for children and young people. It integrates aspects of guidance which can be most confidently associated with better employment outcomes for young people into a new approach to provision. This session provides an overview of the New Brunswick’s latest K-12 Career Education Framework, its rationale and how it is influencing the ongoing development of guidance in the province. |

Lunchtime Bytes—Friday 1st September at 1.30 pm Heather Carpenter—Choices Match Choices Match was chosen for inclusion in the OECD career readiness site as an example of an evidence-based tool, using theories of vocational personality, identity, self-assessment and interest. The aim is to offer the user easy frameworks to draw out key understandings about self and work interests; the tool uses the model of Self + Skills = Possibilities to do this. The user finds the relationships between personality theme, interest and vocational orientation (derived and adapted from Hollands Self-Directed Search), in a self-assessment process. The skills they would like to learn and the work environments they are attracted to are explored in the Skills Kete, and the roles they are interested in are found in attractive Job Cloud Cards. A report summarises their choices. This programme is used in a variety of settings. Dr Heather Carpenter has worked across a range of education and social services settings developing resources, tools and curriculum for all ages. She has a particular interest in career decision-making for young people and providing a good start. Heather is the author of The Career Maze, and your 21st Century career.
