President's Report

By Andrea James

Welcome to the 2021 season! I hope everyone has been able to have a great summer break which included having a well earned break from netball. The Executive team met for the first time last Monday and we are now very much getting back into our work.

There will be a lot of information coming out to clubs in the next few weeks, including the updated regulations, and there is also much information contained in this newsletter. To help with communication, club presidents have been invited to a zoom meeting on February 18th. If your club positions have changed, please pass the invite onto the appropriate person(s).

While 2020 was a season of interruption, 2021 is going to be a season of significant change. The major change impacting all of our members will be the utilisation of the Selwyn Sports Centre. We sincerely hope that this facility will improve the quality and, consequently, enjoyment for all of our members.

In order to run our Centre, we rely on a large number of volunteers. Each year, there is movement in our members and volunteers. At present, we are seeking a small number of willing volunteers to help determine, organise and run our proposed Friday night community netball programme. If this is something of which you would like to be a part, please contact Penni at selwynnetball@xtra.co.nz. Support is also sought in the game official space (see Megan’s report below) and in running our Year 1 to 4 programme. If you are interested in helping in any of these areas or in any other area, please get in touch with Penni.

Olivia McFarlane, who has been the Development Officer at the Centre for the last four years, ended her tenure with us at the end of January. We thank Olivia for all of the work she has completed, especially in the junior and community netball spaces. We know that many of you have enjoyed working with Olivia over the last few years and will join us in wishing her all the very best as she embarks on her journey to becoming a teacher. Olivia will still be a regular face at netball and we look forward to our continued association with her.

Last week I had the fortune of joining a group of both present and past Selwyn Netball Centre members to help celebrate the birthday of Leigh Ayers. We always remember that the Centre exists because of the work completed by those before us and I thank you, ladies, for giving me the opportunity to share this celebration with you.

Game Official Report

Welcome to the 2021 season. We are in a period of change this year and the use of two venues will present many challenges for umpire coaching.

Some important dates to note in your game official coordinators diaries:

March 8 - 7pm - Game Officials meeting - Selwyn Netball Centre

March 29 - Club forum/competitions meeting - team umpires to be advised

April 7 - 7-8pm - Self Analysis - for those centre & above umpires who would like to be mentored this season - LEC

April 14 - 7-8pm - Post Match Discussion - for all umpires Gold, Level 1 & Level 2 who haven’t attended this session before. - LEC

May 2 - 1-2.30pm - Junior Umpire Workshop - for those umpiring year 5 / 6 games - Venue TBA

May 10 - 6-8pm - Rules Night - all invited (Umpires/Players/Coaches/Parents) including Social Umpires - LEC

May 23 - 1-2.30pm - Techniques 1 - for all Gold, Level 1 & 2 or if you haven’t attended this workshop before - Venue TBA.

I would also ask that umpires Level 2 & above give some thought to giving back to the junior programme as we are losing two of our more experienced helpers in Rebecca Johnson (having a break from coaching) & Victoria Bee (off to university). We wish you both the very best & hope to see you back on the courts in the future. If you are interested in this aspect of centre life - giving pointers to our new umpires - please let me know at selwynnetballgameofficials@gmail.com

I am looking forward to an exciting season and hope to catch up with you all on the court.

Celebrating NNZ National Development Camp

What an Opportunity!!!  Aaliyah Metcalf (LHS) and Samantha Laing (HRLNC) were very fortunate to be invited by Netball NZ to attend the National Development Camp held on 13 to 15 January 2021 at Ashburton.

Aaliyah Metcalf shares her experience with you:

“2021 National Development Camp was the most mentally and physically challenging experience I’ve had so far in my netball career.  From the camp I learnt to push myself and not give up.  I received a lot of feedback from high developing coaches which I can now take on board to improve my game play with my positional play and other skill priorities.

The camp was designed to put us under pressure to focus on our mentality and how far you will work to succeed.  It was one of the greatest opportunities for me to be supported and coached by previous Silver Ferns and many well known netball stars”.

Samantha Laing shares her experience with you:

“During the holidays I attended the Netball National Development Camp. This was a really exciting opportunity for me. I found camp very challenging as it was mentally and physically draining. I felt there was a high level of fitness we were expected to meet which wore me out over the three days I was there. I really enjoyed working with other players from around the South Island and the specialist coaches. I received amazing feedback from all of the coaches, which I am excited to bring into my game play this season. I would like to thank everyone who has helped support me along this journey so far.”

Representative Netball

By Jan Roberts

Kia ora koutou,

Our representative season will begin with applications for Representative Coaches and Managers  opening on the 23rd of February. I encourage all coaches and managers who are wanting to extend their development to volunteer and get involved. I know that we are all busy over the netball season with our clubs and families. Often I hear the comment that people would love to get involved but feel that they cannot make the time commitment. This year we have a range of time commitment options within our age groups.

Under 16 and younger have a shorter representative season than the under 18’s. It is our aim to have U16 (and younger) with a shortened rep season of approximately 6 weeks. Under 16 and younger is open to females and males.

Coaching U18’s is a considerable commitment with opportunities to further your netball qualifications and career. Trials start in May, the final tournament is Netball NZ U18 Champs which will be played at the Rotorua Netball Centre in the July school holidays 2021 Monday 19th - Thursday 22nd July.

As always the opportunities we as a centre are able to provide for our players rely on our netball community to get involved.

We are also looking for volunteers to help us with our open rep trials. We have some seasoned selectors who have volunteered already so if you are wanting to gain more experience with selections please do not hesitate to volunteer and get involved. Click here to register your interest now.

Our focus for the Selwyn Representative Program is development. Development of players, coaches, managers and selectors. We will endeavour to provide trialing players with the opportunity to play in a tournament representing Selwyn Netball.

Dates- (venues to be confirmed)

  • Coaches and Managers Applications open 23rd February, close 5th March
  • Applicants interviews 16th 19th March
  • U16-15 and 14 Rep trials Saturday 10th April 10am -12:30, Lunch break. Call backs (invitation only) 2pm-4pm

  • U18  2nd trial (if required) 6:30pm  invitation only

All information and application forms can be found on our website. Also follow us on our Facebook for updated events.

I look forward to lots and lots of applications and volunteers to support our young netballers ;)

Junior Netball

By Kathy Hely

Welcome to an exciting new season for the 1 - 4  players.

Year 1-4 registrations for all venues close on the 12th April.

The Year 1-4 programme will be held in three venues this season:

  • The main programme will be held at the Selwyn Sports Centre at Rolleston on both a Monday and Tuesday afternoon
  • A satellite programme will be held at the Leeston courts on either a Monday or Tuesday - dates and days are still to be finalised
  • A satellite programme will also be held at the Akaroa courts - dates and days are still to be finalised

It is great news that we are able to have the main Year 1-4 programme indoors this season which will mean no cold nights standing out in the cold or any cancellations due to weather. We do realise this may mean more travel but we hope playing inside will out-weigh the extra travel.

Selwyn Netball has 4 courts for a Monday and 7 for a Tuesday at the Selwyn Sports Centre. This means there will only be space for 20 teams max on a Monday. Clubs need to be in really quickly if they are wanting a Monday afternoon for their team / teams.

Selwyn  is looking for junior coordinators to help on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. For every 30 players your club has you will be required to supply a junior coordinator.

Selwyn is also looking for an overall coordinator to help supervise the year 1-4 programme at Selwyn Sports Centre.

For any more information on these positions or if you are interested in helping, please email Penni at selwynnetball@xtra.co.nz

Keep an eye on our website www.sporty.co.nz/selwynnetball for updates and important events happening in our Centre.
