Dear Selwyn Netball Members,
As we wrap up another netball season, a quick shoutout to everyone for the great teamwork and memorable moments. With the courts now quiet, it is time for a well-deserved break. Whether you're chilling on a beach, exploring new spots, or enjoying the comforts of home, we hope you make the most of the off-season.
While we may all be feeling a little tired right now, by late January we will be ready to reunite and kick off the next season together. We have attached the annual report that was presented at our AGM recently and hope that it provides you with interesting reading and a good overview of the season that was. Thank you for all of the valuable contributions you made to the season and our centre.
Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable Merry Christmas. May your celebrations be filled with joy and good company.
Enjoy the summer, the downtime, and the holidays!
Best wishes from all of the Board, Coordinators and Staff at the Selwyn Netball Centre.

Board Chair’s Report
Our netball centre remains committed to continuous evolution to ensure efficient operation and long-term sustainability and we understand the importance of meeting the needs of our members and the broader community of stakeholders. These efforts are guided by our core values of community, enjoyment, respect, and integrity, which serve as the foundation for all our decisions.
The structural changes implemented in 2023 have presented us with both rewards and challenges and we are dedicated to adjusting roles and responsibilities as needed to ensure consistent high-quality outcomes for our members. While our newly formed Board is still in the process of learning each other's strengths, we have already established positive relationships and a shared vision for the future of our netball centre. This alignment will enable us to make well-informed decisions that serve the best interests of our community and stakeholders, and we eagerly anticipate carrying forward the work initiated this year into 2024.
The Board recognises that our centre's high-level operation would not be possible without the dedication and countless hours contributed by both our employees and volunteers. We are incredibly fortunate to have individuals at all levels of our organisation who willingly dedicate their time and effort to ensure positive experiences for others. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all these members who play an indispensable role in the productive functioning of our centre.
We bid a fond farewell to our dedicated Centre Manager, Tash Dillon. Over the last two years, Tash has played a significant role in the growth and development of our centre. Her efforts and commitment have been instrumental in the continued shaping of our organisation. As Tash embarks on new opportunities, we wish her the very best in her future endeavours.
As we look ahead to the coming year, we have identified several strategic priorities to guide our netball centre toward continued success:
- Strengthening Partnerships: We will continue to improve and expand our partnerships, actively participating in the development of the Lincoln Sports Hub and fostering a meaningful relationship with Te Taumutu Rūnanga.
- Expanding Member Offerings: Our goal is to provide more opportunities for both existing and new members, enhancing their experience within the game.
- Leveraging Digital Tools: We will explore the further use of digital tools to enhance the overall member experience and streamline our operations.
- Ensuring Sustainable Funding: It is imperative that we establish sustainable funding channels to support our ongoing operations and initiatives.
- Building Community: Sharing our stories and successes will be a key focus, as we work to strengthen our sense of community and celebrate our achievements together.
In conclusion, the Board remains steadfast in its commitment to the growth and prosperity of the Selwyn Netball Centre. We are excited about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead and are confident that, with the support of our dedicated members and stakeholders, we will achieve our objectives.
Thank you for your continued trust and support of our centre. We eagerly anticipate the journey ahead.

Manager’s Report
It’s been great having a season full of our various competitions and programmes without any disruptions! This has been a strong year for us to really build on the quality experiences we are lucky enough to provide, and we feel high levels of engagement from our community as they come together to enjoy being active and socializing through netball.
2023 has brought us so much positive change as we continue to navigate our way in this ever-changing world to a prosperous future. We welcomed our brand-new Board with four new members, Laura Mulcay into our Centre Administrator role, Shan Hunt into our Representative Coordinator role, Vanessa-Amy Greenwood into our Game Officials Coordinator role, Michelle Taylor into our Partnerships Coordinator role and Tracy Mangels and Maree Cronin into our Community Netball Activator roles. We sadly said farewell to Life Member, Kathy Hely, from our Competitions Coordinator role. Kathy has made an invaluable contribution to our Centre over many years, she will be extremely missed, but we look forward to still seeing her within our Centre watching her grand-children. Denise Geayley has made the decision to step back from her commitments as Player Development Coordinator and Junior Coordinator as she looks to focus her attention as our Coach Coordinator. Denise has, and still is an integral member of our team and we are so grateful for the enormous contribution she has made to our Centre in these two roles. We are very lucky she is continuing on in our coaching space. I would like to give special recognition to our team, although relatively new this year, their positivity, passion and enthusiasm has created a formidable team that collectively allowed us to lead our Centre and deliver a number of quality netball experiences for our community this year.
As we welcomed our CERI volunteer recognition programme back for another year, thanks to the ongoing support from Isaac Group, we saw an increased focus on recognizing and supporting our volunteers and creating positive fair play within our Centre through our 4 centre values of community, enjoyment, respect and integrity. Our end of year CERI volunteer celebration event saw Rebecca Davis being awarded our CERI volunteer of the year for consistently displaying our Centre values throughout the season. “Rebecca is an absolute ray of sunshine and brings with her so much joy and energy wherever she goes…every interaction within our community Bex is kind, caring, considerate and respectful. Rebecca represents herself and Selwyn Netball with the utmost integrity and pride, being an extremely valued member of our community”.
I also had the absolute privilege of awarding Denise Geayley our Service Award for her outstanding service to our Centre throughout the year. “Words can’t even begin to express the levels of absolute admiration and appreciation I have for this phenomenal wahine. The mahi Denise puts into this Centre is absolutely invaluable”. This year, Denise has been involved in our Centre as our Player Development Coordinator, premier and representative umpire, a very valuable umpire coach, our U18 representative head coach, and in a paid role as our Coach Coordinator and Junior Coordinator.
At the end of the season, we had the pleasure of hosting our Life Members for morning tea. This is one of my favourite events of the year as we take time out to reconnect with our roots, sharing special stories and spending time learning more about our history. I am always in awe of these amazing wahine and the phenomenal contribution they have made to our Centre throughout the years, enabling us to be the Centre we are today.
2023 also saw the delivery of the new partnership between Selwyn Netball Centre and Malvern Netball Centre, working closely together creating positive outcomes for both Centres. This year, our focus was on increasing player participation within the Malvern schools, and building umpire and coach capability and resources. 2024 will see us strengthen and continue to build on what has been successfully implemented this year.
I’m so proud of everything we have achieved this year, and look forward to what 2024 brings.
Tash Dillon
Centre Manager
Competitions
What an amazing year it has been in our competition space. We started off the year with our preseason funday with 51 teams across all grades attending. We also had our first Premier 1 Preseason Tournament where we invited teams from North Canterbury and Mid Canterbury to join, there were 12 teams across the 3 centres that participated in the tournament.
As our community continues to grow, so do our available programmes. This year we offered the following competitions:
- Saturday Year 5 – Premier 2 competition being run across both Selwyn Netball Courts outdoor venue, and Selwyn Sports Centre indoor venue
- Premier 1 and Masters 1, 2 and 3 competition was held indoors at the Selwyn Sports Centre on a Thursday night. This was the second year offering a masters competition on a Thursday night, and what a success it was. Having 19 teams and 3 grades.
- Year 1-4 ANZ FutureFERN programme was run indoors on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at the Selwyn Sports Centre with our Ellesmere Satellite programme running at the Leeston Netball Courts.
- Friday Night Social competition was run on a term basis on a Friday evening indoors at the Selwyn Sports Centre in terms 1, 2 and 3
- Thursday Night Social League was introduced this term for the first time, and to say it has been a hit would be an understatement. We have 18 teams in this competition and now have 3 grades - Female, Mixed and High School grades,
We were lucky enough to bring AJ and Jane Rush onboard as our Thursday Night Social League Supervisor, to help organise and oversee games on a Thursday evening. They are both doing such an incredible job down there each Thursday Night.
And what a way to finish the year off then with the return of our Year 1-4 and Year 5/6 Fun Days! These days bring so much fun and enjoyment that fill everyone’s hearts with love for our tamariki and netball. It was such a delight to see whānau’s making the most of the day, bringing not only their outstanding costumes but picnics and BBQ’s, which is what our Selwyn Netball community is all about!
A big thankyou to our clubs and those that have kindly put their hand up to help out in our competitions space. None of these amazing achievements would be possible without you all.

Year 1-4 ANZ futureFERNS
2023 opened with a “Have a Go” day endeavouring to entice more players into our Year 1-4 futureFERNS programme. It was a hugely successful day with 15 coaches and 3 volunteers delivering a fun-filled session for 56 athletes but as our community continues to grow there is huge potential to grow the programme as well.
This year saw 24 Star Helpers, 58 Coaches and five Junior Coordinators deliver the excellent Netball NZ futureFERNS nine week programme at Selwyn Sports Centre, Rolleston and at the Ellesmere Satellite in Leeston. It is a programme designed to grow and develop everyone involved and it is incredible to witness the player and coach development over such a short period and extremely rewarding to observe the enjoyment it provided to approximately 325 young athletes.
Thank you to everyone who made this incredible programme possible, Star Helpers, Coaches and Junior Coordinators you should be extremely proud of your efforts
Game Officials
What a season we have had! Taking on the role of Game Officials Coordinator this year has been a steep learning curve for me and I want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have helped me and encouraged me along the way. Without the input from all the volunteers in our game official area, Selwyn Netball would not be what it is. We have a very strong group of people committed to their development and/or the development of others and for that I am extremely grateful and proud.
Umpire Coaching
The team in the Umpire Coaching Group are amazing, they dedicate so much time and effort into developing our umpires and have shown so much commitment and resilience while working around two venues and two days. With over 100 umpires on our Main Draw (from year 7/8 games- Premier 1 games) there has been a great demand on our Umpire Coaches as so many of these umpires request a coach. I would strongly encourage all our umpires to have a Mentor/Coach as their knowledge is invaluable and you get to build a great netball relationship with these supportive people. Many thanks to our Umpire Coaches Andrea James (Umpire Coach Developer and Umpire Coach), Megan Daniel, Leigh Ayers, Lyn Miles, Anne Marie Baird, Kerryn Jackson, Rebecca Davis, Rebecca Waters, Jo Babe and Andrea Davidson. Your dedication to our umpires is outstanding. The success in achievements for our umpires is also a success for our Umpire Coaches.
Main Draw Umpire Qualifications
- 2x Zone Practical
- 3x Centre Endorsement
- 11x Centre Badges
- 8x Level 2

Congratulations to all of you!
Junior Umpire Programme
This season registrations for junior umpires was around 90 however we ended with 82 umpiring at the end of the season, this is expected as some find that umpiring is not really their ‘thing’.
The junior programme is a great place to start your umpire journey as it doesn’t have the same pressure as ‘Main Draw’ umpiring, as someone who started in the junior programme myself as an adult I highly recommend this is where to start.
My thanks to Rebecca Waters, Viv Manson, Shane Donaldson and Mel Cross who diligently gave so much of their time to help mentor our junior umpires and see that they were able to experience umpiring in a safe and supportive environment.
This season we had an amazing 5 umpires achieve all 3 Awards, Congratulations to Luci Floyd, Scarlett Van Kekem, Ella Brackley-Hall, Isla Swords and Kayla Peace- What an outstanding achievement.
Junior Umpire Achievements
- Bronze 45
- Silver 52
- Gold 29
Congratulations on your achievements and keep up the good work.
Bench Officials
Once again our Bench Officials have been instrumental in the success of our Premier 1 games held on Thursday nights. Claire Lewis was great at once again facilitating the training for this group and I would like to thank her for her support and expertise. I hope to have a lot more to do with you all next season.
Representative Umpires
Tournaments are an amazing experience for players, coaches and umpires alike. This year we have had the opportunity to send more umpires to tournaments and have received great positive feedback.

Coach Development
Tēnā koutou, warm greetings to all
Thank you to all the amazing people who put their hand up to coach a team this season and for all the time and effort you put into planning and providing your players with a quality experience. We are extremely lucky to have such committed coaches supporting athletic development and striving to win, but more importantly taking a holistic approach to supporting development and positively impacting young people more broadly in life.
It was fantastic to see so many of you making the most of development opportunities offered through self-reflection, coach workshops, Year 7&8 Player Development programme, U16 Emerging Talent programme, Coaching for Impact, the Representative programme and development teams and the Netball Mainland Talent ID and National Development Programmes.
FutureFERNS
Two coach workshops were offered in each age group for Star Helpers and Coaches in the futureFERNS space. An informal meeting was also provided for one new Junior Coordinator. On the job training was provided throughout the programme which was delivered on three nights of the week for a nine week period.
Year 1 to 2 24 x Coaches
Year 3 to 4 57 x Coaches (Includes Ellesmere Satellite Coaches)
Year 5 to 6 50x Coaches
Year 7 to 8 50 x Coaches
Junior Coordinator 2 x Junior Coordinator (Informal)
An increase in coaches attending all levels other than Year 1/2 where lesser teams entered meaning less coaches were required.
Community Coach Award Level 1 and 2 Workshops:
It was great to see a shift back to workshops being delivered in the Centre with a very committed group of coaches making the most of the opportunities provided and several nearing the completion of their CCA1 qualification. A variety of Christchurch and Selwyn Coach Developers were used to facilitate these workshops with coaches completing an online component in their own time prior to attending the practical workshops where they valued the opportunity to connect and share experiences with other coaches. We were fortunate to be able to offer all workshops free to coaches this season due to funding provided through the Netball NZ Coach Development partnership. This funding is also available for 2024.
An excellent initiative was introduced this season offering two player development sessions directly after the CCA1 - Shooting workshop. Not only did this provide development for 46 shooters it also presented an opportunity for the coaches who attended the workshop to directly apply their new learnings under the supervision of two Coach Developers. Due to its success this will be continued in 2024.
CCA1 Modules:
Five CCA1 workshops were delivered by the Centre and a number of online workshops were provided by Netball NZ, South, Central and Mainland with 57 coaches making the most of these development opportunities.
CCA2 Modules:
In addition three CCA2 workshops were provided with 13 coaches attending.
Year 7 & 8 Player Development Programme:
Once again, this programme provided an excellent development opportunity for thirteen amazing coaches who volunteered to deliver the programme to our Tamariki.
Session plans were provided to the coaches who were then able to attend a session prior to the programme each day to run through each of the activities to reinforce their understanding before delivering to the players. Player feedback was obtained and fed back to the Coach Developers during the end of session reflections with changes made to the next session if required. Once again, coaches had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from NNZ’s NetballSmart Development Officer.
Sincere thanks to the amazing coaches who gave up their valuable time to deliver the programme for our Tamariki:
Coaches:
Laura Mulcay Broadfield
Kaylah Rawson Broadfield
Ash Sullivan Burnham
Helen Rawstron Ellesmere Combined
Louise Cardno Halswell

U16 Emerging Talent:
Due to the success of combining the NNZ Year 9 & 10 Starter Programme with our U16 rep programme in 2022 we undertook to deliver the same this season. Unfortunately, the huge number of rep triallists detracted from the player development programme so this has been revised with the U16 Emerging Talent programme to be delivered separately in the first week of the 2024 April school holidays. Rep Coaches and selectors will be observing throughout the programme.
A huge thank you to these amazing coaches who gave up their valuable time to deliver our 2023 programme for our Rangitahi and continued to coach either a representative or development team:
Coaches:
Laura Mulcay (U16A Rep Team) Broadfield
Josie Topp (U16A Rep Team) Templeton
Louise Cardno (U16B Rep Team) Halswell
Tracy Mangels (U16B Rep Team) West Melton
Jackie Freeman (Development Team) Lincoln High School
Jo Cameron (Development Team) Rolleston
Nicola Johnston (Development Team) Prebbleton
Vienna Gallagher (Development Team) Broadfield
Deb Johnson (Development Team) Ellesmere Combined
Kerry Sinclair (Development Team) Halswell
Kerryn Jackson (Development Team) Southbridge
Coach Developer:
Denise Geayley
Coaching for Impact:
While our five coaches Deb Johnson, Julia McIlraith, Louise Cardno, Tracy Mangels and Ange Cawthray completed their last few sessions of the first Coaching for Impact programme, Kerryn Jackson commenced her first sessions of the new programme being delivered by Sport NZ. Kerryn was accepted into the programme as a coach and myself as a Coach Developer. There has already been an incredible amount of learning through this programme and we both look forward to the year ahead to make connections and further our development.
Netball Mainland Talent ID Camps:
In parallel to the NM Player Talent ID Camps Netball Mainland offered a small number of CCA1, CCA2 and PCQ coaches the opportunity to go along and observe Tania Hoffman, NM Player Development Officer and her assistants in action, reconnect as a community of coaches and to participate in some facilitated group work and discussions. Eight Selwyn coaches accepted invitations to attend the sessions being run on 23 and 30 October.
National Development Camp (Jan 2024)
An exciting addition to the National Development camps in 2024 is the opportunity to include facilitated coach observations across the three days of the camp. This new component of the NDC will be facilitated by NNZ’s Community Coaching Manager and a Coach Lead from the Zone where the camp is held. Ashleigh Collier, Kerryn Jackson and Denise Geayley are excited to have been offered places at the camp to partake in facilitated observations of both on and off court sessions throughout the NDC programme. They will be shown a variety of coaching styles, the importance of quality and intensity in training and is an introduction to performance level netball.
2023 Community Coach Awards:
The Community Coaching framework is for the development of coaches working with athletes from 12-18 years. It includes a set of modules which provide basic knowledge and skills to develop players at the community level. These modules include an online and practical component and are designed to help coaches understand the importance of using a player-centered approach.
Although we have a number of coaches nearing the completion of their CCA1 qualification we have one coach who has attained her CCA2 modules and her final observation. Sincere congratulations to Jackie Freeman for all the time and effort she has put into attaining this award.
Coach of the Year - 2023
Congratulations to Louise Cardno, Halswell RLNC for being the very deserving recipient of this award for her outstanding contribution to the Centre and her own personal coach development. Louise very successfully led the U16B Rep team to win both the Field Days and U16 Tupuranga tournament for their grades, establishing excellent relationships with her players and other team officials. She was also involved in the pilot Coaching for Impact programme, took her Halswell team through to the finals and fully immersed herself into the Year 7&8 and Under 16 Emerging Talent programs. Louise makes the most of all coach development opportunities and really adds value to both her club and our centre.
Coach Collective:
Coach Collective was a new initiative to provide further development for player and umpire coaches and to engage Coach Connectors to work alongside coaches throughout the season providing them with “on the job” support. The first Coach Collective workshop was extremely successful with 19 coaches in attendance. Activating our Coach Connectors is a work in progress and will continue to develop throughout the 2024 season.
Enjoy the break and look forward to seeing you all again in 2024 for more amazing Netball.
Ngā mihi nui
Denise Geayley
Player Development
Thanks to the amazing coaches mentioned above we have once again been able to provide quality learning experiences and development opportunities for our athletes through:
- Preseason fitness, strengthening and skill development sessions (13 athletes)
- Year 7&8 Player Development Programme (80 athletes)
- U16 Emerging Talent (70 athletes)
- Field Days development teams (38 athletes)
- Netball Mainland Talent ID sessions (17 athletes)
- National Development Camp sessions (3 athletes)
- Senior & Yr 7&8 Circle Attack/Defence and Shooting development sessions in conjunction with Community Coaching Award workshops (50 athletes)
There is so much room for growth in the player development area and I am excited to see a group of very enthusiastic and energetic people continue in this space next season.
It has been an absolute honour to work with so many athletes, coaches, umpires and volunteers in this space and I sincerely thank everyone for the huge amount of support you have given me throughout my tenure in the role of Player Development Coordinator.
Representative
For 2023 we have had four Representative teams, Open Senior, U18, U16A, and U16B
Our U16 teams competed in the Tupuranga U16 Tournament over King’s birthday weekend. It was a fantastic weekend of netball and great to see our Selwyn teams being so competitive. Our A team competed in the A grade achieving a superb 3rd place overall & our B team taking out the mixed grade for its first year running.
Our U18 team competed in the King’s birthday tournament held by Christchurch. It was a tough competition with some fantastic talent on display, but a great first hit out for our U18 team to come together.
The U16A team travelled to attend the Top of the South Tournament in Blenheim. It is nice to see
the new friendships and see the girls supporting each other while away from their whanau.
All 4 representative teams attended the annual Field Days tournament in North Canterbury. Our Senior team took out runners up in their grade, it was a great day of netball displayed by a team who came together on the day. Our U18A team won their grade and was great practice for them to play outdoors before heading to NZ nationals. Our U16A team won their grade and took out the trophy for best points differential. Our U16B team took 3 rd place in this grade. Selwyn was awarded the Audrey Styles Shield for the centre with the best points average over all grade teams.
Our U18 team attended the 2023 NZ Nationals in Hamilton. A tournament made up of mainly North Island teams and a lot of larger centres made for a tough week away, the team fought hard all week and came home with some great learnings. We’re very proud of the team and their coaching personnel, it is a privilege to attend NZ Nationals and this team demonstrated resilience and commitment to being fantastic ambassadors for our centre.
Selwyn hosted the annual Forrester Trophy and Lindsay Cup with North Canterbury at the beginning of August. Our U16A team came away with a great win for the Forrester Trophy, unfortunately our Senior team could not retain the Lindsay Cup, which means North Canterbury will host us next year for this fantastic annual event.
Our Senior team attended the Whakataetae Senior Tournament held by Mid Canterbury. Our Senior team was competitive, and it was a great couple of days with incredible netball on display.
Finally, a massive thank you to all involved in the representative program. Players, coaches, managers, selectors, umpires and parents. With your ongoing support, we can continue to provide the above opportunities for our members.
