Kia ora koutou

It has been our first full week of classes and what a great week it has been! Classes are going well and those important connections between teachers, students and home are being made. A great example of this was last night’s Year 9 BBQ. It was a beautiful evening and so good to have a large number of Year 9 students, parents and whānau here to connect with Tūhono teachers, Deans, SLT and student leaders in an informal relaxed setting. Thanks to all who came along and we hope you enjoyed the evening as much as I did.

On Wednesday our student leaders ran a bake sale to fundraise for Kāpiti Foodbank and to promote kindness for all (on Valentine’s Day). Paper hearts with messages of encouragement were given out, there was a guess the Hershey’s Kisses in the jar and a kindness photo frame for all to get their pics taken. Such a great initiative from our Community Captains & Services Committee.

School Buses

We are currently experiencing issues with students not being able to fit on board the buses that travel from Waikanae Countdown to Paraparaumu College each morning. There are three different services that are all scheduled to leave about 8.20 each morning - the 507, 508 and 510. It is important that as many students as possible board the first bus to go (and then fill up the second). Currently some students are waiting for the final bus to leave and some days this is resulting in not all students being able to fit on board. This can particularly affect students travelling from Ōtaki and Te Horo whose bus only arrives in Waikanae in time for them to catch the last of the three buses to the college. If you have a young person who travels on any of these services, we would appreciate your support in talking to them about the need to get on the first available bus.

Likewise, at the end of the school day, students who are travelling to Waikanae Beach should have priority for the 510 bus and the 508 bus is primarily for students who live in the general vicinity of Kapakapanui School. Students only travelling as far as Waikanae Countdown should use the 507 bus and then fill up any spare spaces on the 508 and 510 services.

Hall of Fame

Our Hall of Fame acknowledges students’ post-college success. This project aims to give recognition to former students who have achieved exceptionally well after secondary school and hopefully inspire current students to also achieve at a high level.

Paraparaumu College calls on members of our wider school community to nominate potential recipients of this recognition for 2023 and 2024.

All the details about nominating and past inductees can be found below.  Please have a think if you know someone who could be nominated.  We look forward to receiving nominations by Friday 1 March 2024.

Coming up next week: School photos

Monday is our day for class photos and individual photos. Can we please ask your help in ensuring students come to school in the correct uniform so they are able to be in the photos. Students need to check the times for their class photo as they happen throughout the day.

Coming up next week: Sports Day

We are looking forward to our Sports Day next Tuesday. At this stage the long range weather forecast is predicting a great day but in the event of a postponement we will run the event on the next day, Wednesday. Students are asked to dress in House colours (which can be their PE uniform or a House coloured top) and to bring a hat to protect from the sun. Sunscreen is available on the day but we advise everyone to sunscreen up before they come on the day to ensure they are protected right from the get go (sometimes an overcast morning can catch students out). We look forward to a great day, one where all students can be involved.

SchoolAppsNZ / Facebook

This is a good opportunity to remind you all that we will communicate messages for things like Sports Day postponements through SchoolAppsNZ. Please download the app and choose Paraparaumu College as your school. We also use our school Facebook for urgent messages of that nature and also highlight student success, so please follow that as well.  You can find the links at the bottom of this newsletter.
