NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS 12th March 2021
The 2021 Rugby season kicks off on May 8th! To make sure we are all set to go, as a club ALL players are required to register prior to the season. To do so, please click here.
GRADES & TEAM TRIALS: 2021 sees some changes to the grades offered with U16s becoming U17 and U18s becoming U19 (see poster below). Nelson College teams will be selected through a trial process with the aim of making fair even teams in all grades. All trials will start at 3.30pm at Broads Playing Fields. Players are expected to come prepared with mouthguards, boots, socks, shorts and a drink bottle. Jerseys will be provided.
SUBS: The 2021 Rugby Sub is $110. This fee provides you with a free warm up tee, use of a playing top and their dry-cleaning, equipment, travel, administration and more. This MUST be paid before the season begins and upon payment your son will be able to collect his warm up tee. Payment Details:

ALL coaches are required to register and attend a Tasman Rugby Union Rugby Smart Course. The Nelson course is scheduled for Wednesday 24th March starting 5.45pm at the Nayland College Gym. Thank you.

YOUTH ADVISORY GROUP The Tasman Rugby Union, with the support of New Zealand Rugby, are looking to implement a Youth Advisory Group. The purpose and goal is to create an environment that supports authentic youth representation; furthermore, promote youth voice central to the design, delivery, and environment of teenage Rugby. This is an opportunity for all U14-U19 participants to have their say. They are looking for a diverse range of teenagers that share a passion for Community Rugby. This is a first in NZ Rugby, and has the potential to lead great change and give our teenagers further opportunities at a national level. INTRODUCING - Max Fraine Hi, my name is Max, I'm a 20 year old former student of Nelson College coming on board this year as a strength and conditioning coach for both the junior and senior rugby academies as well as the First XV along with positional coaching. As a Nelson College old boy and former member of the First XV I take great pride in being back involved with the school and rugby programmes this year. I graduated from Nelson College at the end of 2017 and am currently in my final year of my Bachelor’s Degree in Sport, Recreation and Exercise through the Auckland University of Technology and as part of that I am required to undergo industry placement in the field of sport and recreation and where better to go than my former school which I still feel closely attached to. During my time at Nelson College, I managed to make my First XV debut in 2015 as a 15 year old year 11 student before being a member for my remaining two years at the college. Some highlights from my time would be winning the Quadrangular Tournament on the front field and winning and retaining the Moascar Cup for the rest of my time. Since graduating from the school my rugby accolades include being a member of the Crusaders Academy up until the end of 2020 where I am now undergoing an internship as a strength and conditioning coach, as well as representing Tasman in age grade level and also being involved in campaigns such as Tasman B, Tasman High Performance group and the Tasman Mako team which toured America in early 2020. Since being back involved with the school and the programmes, it has put into perspective how much work has gone into making the programme what it is today and I am extremely excited to see what we can achieve this year and in future years to come. |

INTRODUCING - James Marshall Hey, I’m James Marshall and I’m excited to back at the place where it all started for me. So I grew up in Nelson and I’m a Nelson College old boy before embarking on my rugby career, which has seen me play the game I love all over the world. I spent the majority of my career with the Wellington Hurricanes and I only finished with them last season due to a hip injury. I’ve quite quickly jumped into the coaching scene and I’ll be an assistant coach for the Tasman Mako this season. My role at Nelson College is working with the Year 10 rugby class, it’s an age that a was massive turning point for me. I’m hoping to help anyone who wants to become a professional rugby player achieve their goal and teach the ones who don’t some of the valuable lessons the sport can teach you, which will help with any path they might choose. |
