Kart Sport Challenge & Southland 5km Champs
37 runners participated in our first 5Km champs event
11 volunteers assisted in the set up and running of the event
To all participants, volunteers and spectators who braved the wind and the rain on Saturday, thank you for making memories at our new event.
5 members Fiordland Club joined us and a special thanks to Shaun Cantwell who assisted to set up our 5km start and finish line.
Our Junior runners took to the track first. Completing 3 or 4 laps they set out at great pace, just as the skies opened up and the rain fell down. It did not last long, and the cheers of the crowd kept them going. Even more remarkable was the fact that for 5 of our Juniors it was there first Harrier event. What a way to start the season!
Then it was time for the seniors and masters to take their marks. The women and men ran together and self seeded at the start line. The banter and nervous laughter continued until the Southland Athletics Club President set us off, and off we went, 7 laps plus 380 meters.
In most Harrier events, the front runners are gone and sometimes never seen again. Not so on Saturday, all competitors got to run there own race but at the same time keep a close eye on all the other competitors as we completed loop after loop of the track.
Hot drinks and donuts were the perfect finish line treat.
An extra special thank you to all the volunteers that stood out in the weather, timing the event and counting laps.
Congratulations to the 2024 Southland 5km champions Dwight Grieve and Nicole Jackson
