From the Principal….
Kia ora e whānau,
As we navigate the last three terms of Term 2, it has been exciting to celebrate our significant success in a number of areas. We were so incredibly proud and pleased for our School, Pohutukawa Class and Cameron Orr! The hard work and perseverance paid off! Our school was the highest scoring school in our Kātote Kāhui of 9 schools, in The Timetables Rockstars tournament which was held last week. But wait … that is not all …. Pohutukawa were the top scoring class and Cameron Orr was the Most Valuable Player! This is definitely going to be acknowledged and appreciated with a treat day for Pohutukawa Class this Friday! I also understand that there is going to be a special presentation made to our school next week.
Next Wednesday 26th June our Year 5-8 Kapa haka Performance Group have been invited to perform in the Kaiapoi Matariki Lights Festival between 5pm - 5.30pm. if your child is in Kauri, Kahikatea or Totara they will be performing! You will receive specific information for this on Monday - what time to be there, where to meet, etc. Please email your child's class teacher if your child is unable to perform in our Kapahaka performance, as soon as possible. The performers will need to wear their school uniform.
Currently David Harrison, Father Do and I are attending the New Zealand Catholic Education Convention in Wellington. A special thank you to Mrs Kreft and Mrs Shaw who have been the Acting Principals, while we have been away. This is the first gathering in six years of Principals, Directors of Religious Studies, Teachers of Religious Education, Board members, Parish Priests and Bishops, from most of our Catholic Schools and Parishes. The Conference Theme is Tūhono Whakapono - Together One Faith Community. We are finding the Conference very interesting and informative. We look forward to coming back and sharing our new learning opportunities with staff, students and parents.
One of the workshops I attended asked the question:
Why do we teach about human sexuality in Catholic Communities?
- the importance of human dignity
- an understanding of the nature of respect
- the concept of love in all of its forms
- the need to follow the person and example of Jesus and have compassion for all
- the importance of the Beatitudes and values within them
- the need for integrity in all our encounters
- how we should embrace our uniqueness as images of God
This is timely for us as a school, faith-based community as next term we prepare to teach Sexuality Education to our rangatahi - young people. This is taught every two years (biennially) at St Patrick's School and it is important that we consult with you as parents and caregivers to explain what we teach at each year level, so that you can also talk and reinforce the concepts that your children are learning about. All of our Sexuality Education aligns with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
The Consultation meetings - you have a choice of two - are being run on Wednesday 24th July at either 2-3pm or 6-7pm. I will send out a reminder closer to the time. If you are unable to attend either of the Consultation meetings we will email you an overview, of what is being taught for each year level.

We need helpers!

We wish Miss Begg all the very best for her trip to Vancouver, Canada. She is playing for the White Sox New Zealand Softball team and will be away for the last two weeks of the term. Mrs Annette Williams will be teaching Pohutukawa during the time Miss Begg is away. Good luck Miss Begg!
