FROM THE CHAIR
Happy Matariki to all of our Southland Harrier family.
Runners, walkers, committee members, volunteers, parents and supporters.
This weekend I had a bit of time to think, and I was thinking alot about sportsmanship, and its importance especially as an older competitor and parent. I am fairly new to the sport of Athletics, and still learning the ropes, but I do come from a competitive background and sports has always been a part of my life.
I was a competitive swimmer, but also played soccer and volleyball. I wanted to win, trained hard, and loved competition, as there is no better feeling than standing on a podium, especially in that top spot. However I also I loved the friendships, the gatherings, the road-trips, bus trip, the sound of the team cheering you on!
It was always about the team, our team and the other team, shaking hands or sharing hugs after a hard race or game. It was also about respect, for the coaches, supporters, the parents, and the volunteers that spent endless ours at the side of the pool or on the turf officiating. It was about making everyone better on the day, win or lose. We showed up because they showed up.
In an individual sport like athletics, swimming, or cycling I believe this is even more important. As you need everyone there on race day or there is no sport. At a Southland event winning is never, never, never more important than sportsmanship!
If you are fast and at the top of your game, you need the officials, the handicappers, the coaches, the supporters to cheer you on and the other runners to race and train with.
So this year lets see everyone at Southland Cross-Country compete with sportsmanship in their heart. If you are a medal or trophy winner please stick around afterwards and receive you medals and trophies in person, and thank a volunteer!!
