Southland Cross-Country Champs 2024
62 Runners Took Part In This Years Champs
12 Volunteers Assisted In The Set Up And Running Of This Event
By 2pm on Saturday the ice on the puddles had just thawed, the sun was shinning and the finish banner was up. 62 runners found their place on the start line, ready to race. Over fast farm tracks, across cool running streams, over logs, around (or through) the mud and up and over the hill. It was a stunning day for the Southland Cross Country Champs, and some fantastic racing was had, with more then one race category finding 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishing within seconds of each other.
Thank you to all the volunteers, runners and parents who supported our Championship Event.
The course was in excellent condition, the best it has been in years. There was minimal mud through the trees and everyone stayed on their feet on the downhill. Graham Hall the course designer finds something challenging for every participant in the field, and whether a runner completed one, two or three laps, everyone hurt a little. That's cross-country running a little bit of hurt for all the glory, right Hannah Hunt!
There were some stacked fields, and close finishes.
Under 14 boys: Flyn Webber finished less then 1 second before CJ Iversen.
Under 16 boys: Hudson Roy came in 8 seconds before Cayden Sanginiti who was less then a second in front of 3rd place Lewis Blay.
Senior Males: Benjamin Britton first place and a second behind him Sagar Khemani.
A special mention to Dwight Grieve who placed 1st master 35-49 but also 1st to finish over the 9kms distance, crossing the finish line 30 seconds in front of Ben, and closely followed by Kelvin Meade and Jason Russel. A fantastic males 9km race.
An extra special mention to Debbie Telfer who just missed taking out the 6km female field, ahead of runners 20 years her junior. Debbie Telfer is training for New Zealand Cross-Country nationals, and is in top shape, a true inspiration.
The award for cutest age group goes to the Kirkmans, our 70+ winners, hashtag couple goals!!
This years Female Shield, went to Gore Harriers thanks to some fantastic results in the 16 and under categories. The Male Shield went to St. Pauls. Congratulations to the winning clubs.
Thank you to everyone who registered early, it is extra important for a championship event as runner club registration needs to be confirmed, to ensure Champ placings and Shield results. Results are up on Webscorer with adjustments to be made in relation to club registration.
Photos still coming so keep an eye on Facebook.
