From the Chair

I have always admired anyone who can do math on the fly, it was not a gift I was given. So a big shout out to Grant Baker and Debbie Telfer who helped on Saturday. It was nice to have fast results and let everyone carry on with their day. It was too beautiful of a day, not to squeeze as much fun in as possible. Also great to have Lillian and Henry Tudor on the finish line, this every devoted chairperson sure does miss them when they are not. To all the other volunteers, we could not run the day without you. As we approach our halfway point for the season, it is great to know we have an amazing group of people that put their hands up to time events, hand out finishing numbers and record placings.

For a lot of us Southland Harriers it was a big weekend of events. Many of us belong to other clubs such as the Southland Triathlon and Multisport Club, and the Southland Orienteering Club, who both had events on this weekend. Participating in other clubs events is so rewarding as I can sit back and enjoy the event with none of the organising!! It does remind me though, that none of our Southland Harrier events go on without the help of the committee and the volunteers on the day.

So………………… I would like to start talking about next year's committee, as we are going to need some new blood. Last year before signing off Linda put together a list of Harrier Roles which I will post below. These are the behind the scene roles that need to be done on a weekly basis throughout the winter season. So please if you think you may have a strength or talent that could benefit the Southland Harriers give us a shout. Not all of these roles would involve coming on to the committee but they do need to be done. Your current committee is a pretty cool crew and we would need the help.

  • Chairperson, Vice-Chair, Secretary, and Course Designer.
  • Communications (weekly newsletter), Handicapper Senior and Junior, ICC and ES applications for events, ANZ reports (champs reports and records), media contact, Registrations and Starting Line-Up coordinator, Results, Social Media, Trophies and photographer.

Race 3-Shoe Clinic Handicap Series

No Watch Run

33 Runners Participated In This Event

9 Volunteers Assisted In The Set Up And Running Of This Event

It was an absolutely stunning afternoon at the Invercargill Estuary, for our No Watch Run. Watching all of the keen runners young and old take off down the track with the searing Southland winter sun at their backs was a pretty cool scene.

The No Watch concept is one that is used by many other Athletic Clubs and is a bit of fun!! The idea is to keep the course secret for as long as you can, then get everyone to predict their time. There can be a lot of variables put into play but as it was our first time holding such an event we created a simple out and back.

Our Junior 2km runners may have got a little help, but regardless there were some very good predictions. Stella Collard, was 15 seconds off. Alex Jackson only 13 seconds off, which was very commendable as it was his first run back after some foot issues. Hudson Garret took out the win with a predicted time of 11 minutes and a finishing time of 11 minutes, 12 seconds. Maybe a future Handicapper in the making.

The Senior 5km runners ran at their own chosen pace. A  handful were spotted earlier in the day at Park Run and I know at least one runner had completed a few laps of Bluff Hill at sunrise, so I hope they took these factors into account. Logan Jordaan, was 5 seconds faster then he predicted, Lachie Watson 3 seconds faster, and for the win Cassie Horton, only 2 seconds faster then her predicted time.

Our spot prize winners were: Kye Ah Kuoi in the Juniors and Kimberley Iversen in the Seniors. At all of our Shoe Clinic Series events, every participant goes into the draw to win a $25.00 Shoe Clinic Voucher. Thank you Shoe Clinic, for your ongoing support.
