Daffodil Bay Fun Run

Eight hearty Southland Harriers (and two dogs) brave the weather at Sandy Point on Saturday for a “fun run”.

Weather conditions all day ranged from diabolical to downright ‘character building’.

So why not get out in it and build character!

We all had a pleasant run on the tracks & trails around Daffodil Bay and couldn’t help but feel ‘virtuous’ (Marie’s description) with our efforts.”

FROM THE CHAIR

Just a little reminder that our winter season is soon to end, with just a few events left on the calendar. If you enjoyed the season and had the chance to attended even a smattering of our events, please put our final run of the Shoe Clinic Super 8 Series at the Waihopai River on your calendar (28th of September) . This is a fun event, and we would love everyone to dress up, no theme, and then join us afterwards at St. Paul's clubrooms for a get together to celebrate a “big” season of running and supporting Southland Harriers.

Race 7 Shoe Clinic Series- Bluff Hill Climb.

Where: Bluff Hill (Gunpit Road for Parking, start Stirling Point), please take the time to read parking instructions below!!

When: Saturday 14th September, 2024

Time: 2pm-first runner sets us off

This run is 100% worth the effort and this is the perfect opportunity to set a benchmark time for future events, but unfortunately, there is no sugar-coating Bluff Hill, it will be a tough run for everyone, from our fastest runners, through to our kids, masters and back of the pack runners.

There is also no doubt that everyone will be able to complete this event. The council list it at 2.1km and a 60min walk. We are expecting our fastest runners to come in under 15min, middle of the pack runners 20-40min and some of the slower runners and kids 40-60min.

This is a one way run, up the hill, you don’t run back down. Starting at Stirling Point, up past the gun emplacements, to the summit via the Topuni Track. The track is steep, with wooden edged stairs and can be narrow in places. We have permission to use the track, but at all time need to be aware of other members of the public and be 100% courteous.

The council do not want us overcrowding the car-park at Stirling Point and have encouraged us to park at the end of Gunpit Road. So park on Gunpit Road (off Walker Street) and then walk down to the start (500m), or alternatively drop your kids off at Stirling Point, drive to Gunpit Road to see them go past, then head up to the top to pick them up after they finish. Another way we can reduce traffic is to car-pool, if anyone has a spare seat please comment on our Facebook posts to see if we can fill it up.

As this is a one way run, we also need to make sure everyone has a plan on how they will get back to their cars, or get picked up from the top. Either with a pick-up for the younger runners, or for those older runners, perhaps a long run down the Millennium Track to the look-out, then back across the Foveaux Walkway.

Race Briefing is at 2.00pm, which everyone must attend, with runners starting shortly after in 30 second waves, with our faster runners starting first to try and avoid having to pass other runners. Parents who have young kids are welcomed (and encouraged) to run with their children on this one. If there is anyone out there who could follow everyone up as a Tail-End-Walker it would be greatly appreciated.

The plan is to meet afterwards at Hayz@The Anchorage, if runners would like to join us for a catch up. Time to be confirmed.

If you have entered and have decided Bluff Hill isn’t for you, please let us know so we can organize our start lists before race day.

A few more photos from the Tuatara Teretonga Ten K- if you are not on Facebook, and wonder if there any photos of you participating in the event, flick us an email. We have got some great shots from the event and are happy to send some through if asked.
