We were thrilled to see such a fantastic turnout at our Have-A-Go Day today! We hope your riders had an enjoyable and exciting experience.

We warmly welcome all new riders to continue exploring the thrill of BMX with us. To help you get started, we offer three free sessions for new riders to try out the sport before committing to sign up and obtaining a licence.

For those who need equipment, we have gear available for hire on a first-come, first-served basis: gloves and helmets are $2 each, and bikes are $5.

We are about to transition from our off-season schedule to in-season club days, here are some key details:

Training Monday Evenings (Starting 30th September):

  • Beginners/sprockets: 5:15pm
  • Pumpers & Jumpers: 5:45pm
  • Fast Crew: 6:15pm

Our riders train in ability groups to ensure everyone gets the most out of their sessions.

Club Racing Wednesday Evenings:

  • Registration: 5:15pm - 5:45pm
  • Strider Races: 5:30pm
  • Club Racing: Starts at 6pm

Riders race in groups based on ability. New riders generally start from the tabletop on the second corner unless they are confident starting from the top of the starting ramp. We usually have 5 motos (races) for each class, with a break after 4 rounds.

The club BBQ runs on a Wednesday evening, with parents taking turns to run.

For both training and racing, riders must wear:

  • A long-sleeved top
  • Long pants
  • Gloves
  • Enclosed shoes (no crocs or gumboots, please)
  • A full-faced helmet
  • Riders 7 years & under need to wear elbow & knee protection

We post updates on our Facebook page “Hawkes Bay BMX Club” by 3pm on the day if racing or training is canceled. Track closures and other notices are also posted there, so we recommend liking and following our page.

Our membership(licence) runs from 1 January to 31 December.

For more membership details, please visit: Hawkes Bay BMX Club Membership and click on the membership button.

BMX is raced the age you are turning within the year. For example if the rider is born in 2013, they would race in the 11 year old age group.`

Sprockets are riders the will be turning 7 years old or younger within the year. These riders race they are on the day of the race meet. For the 2025 race season, Sprocket riders are born 2018 or later.

Licence Types:

  • Strider Licence $40: For balance bike riders aged under 5 years. (Born prior to 2020)
  • Sprocket Licence $120: For pedal bike riders 7 years and under. (Born 2018 or later)
  • Regional Licence $100: For riders 8+ years old, which only want to ride locally. (Born 2017 or earlier)
  • Challenge Licence $150: For riders 8+ years old, valid for all Challenge 20” and Cruiser classes & can race across New Zealand. (Born 2017 or earlier)

The first thing you will need to do is make sure you get the correct sized BMX race bike based on your riders height. BMX race bikes are sized from Micro Mini (The smallest with 18" wheels) through to Pro (adult) sizes. These sizes refer to the overall size of the frames and parts but the wheel diameter will remain the same at 20” (except the micro mini) despite the width of the tyres varying.

Take a ride through our handy guide to find out what size bike best suits you.

Note: there is some overlap between sizes as personal preference comes into the equation. And also every brand is different.

This table is a guide to sizes. Please do not hesitate to ask the crew at the track for guidance.

Members in the club will be travelling to race meets and may be able to collect bikes from around the country for you.
