Welcome to The Village Viewpoint sponsored by Gavin and Cassie Murphy and the team at Gee and Hickton Ltd Funeral Directors, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, and Porirua.

Things are starting to heat up down at North Park. The pre season kicks up another gear as we host Pōneke this Saturday 8th March. Pop down and check out our large and promising colts squad, our trusty true-blue Prem Reserves and youthful, exciting Premier unit. Action starts from 12 noon.

The Women's team have their first hit out against Marist from Palmerston North who head south on 22 March for a 11:00AM kickoff at North Park.

The Brotherhood are having a run around this coming Wednesday night, 6pm. If you are keen to play some slightly more social rugby or struggle to make trainings on weeknights but keen to play on Saturdays, pop down and join in with Brent Little and the boys!

ABOVE: Stanley Solomon and Thompson Tukapua in action for the Hurricanes u20's last week.

Stanley has also been playing with the Hurricanes B's Hunters, with the amount of injuries plaguing the canes at the moment he might not be far away from a call up…

We are all eagerly awaiting, Silverstream prodigy and ex Petone Junior Thompson Tukapua to make his senior debut for the club. Coaches and onlookers alike have been very impressed with this young man's skills and demeanor.

The Petone Rugby Football Club is celebrating 140 years this season

PetoneMan 2025 was taken out by two time Olympian Kurtis Imrie! Currently on a sabbatical from kayaking Kurtis has been enjoying preseason and getting back into footy for the first time since his College years. It's been great to see him running around on North Park with brother and Premier warhorse Ryan.

Kurtis made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 where he and partner Max Brown placed 5th in the K2 sprint event. In Paris 2024, he competed with Hamish Legarth in the K2 500m, and also with Max Brown, Hamish Legarth and Grant Clancy in the K4 where the crew made the final.

A huge shoutout to all the PetoneKids who came out, 22 juniors took on the kids course on North Park, you guys smashed it! Ka pai

Champion Teams - Petone Rugby 1907

Despite the disruption of losing six players at the end of the season to Baskerville’s “All Gold” League tour to England and Australia Petone completed a four-peat of Senior A titles. All five of the club’s teams won their grade, combining for 51 wins, three losses and three draws in 57 games.

Chuck these key dates in your calendar! WRFU have just announced that our defending champion Ponies will begin their regular season campaign on Saturday 5th April, same weekend as the men.

Thank You Sponsors!

Big shoutout to loyal sponsor Peak Electrical www.peakelectrical.co.nz

Peak has been providing award winning electrical contracting to the wider Wellington region since 1998. The company has enjoyed steady growth with a present staff number of twenty. Director Glen O’Toole attributes this success to listening to their clients needs and providing value through quality products and service. Their large team and combined experience has enabled them to specialise in domestic, commercial and industrial electrical services across the capital.

Glen played some age grade rugby for the club many moons ago before starting a family on Heretaunga Street Petone. He then returned to the club as a junior coach for many years before founding Peak in 1998.

Project manager and the Company's newest Director Dylan Williamson played multiple years for the colts before working his way up the grades to have a solid Premier career. The hard working lock was awarded his blazer in 2021.

Glen & Dylan both encourage community sport for its life lessons, team and character building, fitness, camaraderie and fun! Peak are proud sponsors of many local clubs, schools and the Te Omanga Hospice.

Welcoming back Gee & Hickton for their 10th season sponsoring Petone Rugby!

Every celebration of life is unique. Whether you’re pre-planning your own funeral, recording your wishes, or arranging a farewell for a loved one, Gee & Hickton Funeral Directors is here to help. With decades of experience, they offer kindness, respect, and a deep understanding of your needs.

Gavin Murphy leads a dedicated team of 25 across Gee & Hickton’s Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, and Porirua branches. With over 35 years in the industry, he has made a lasting impact in the Hutt Valley, both professionally and through his extensive community involvement—most notably with the Te Omanga Hospice Foundation. A proud supporter of Petone Rugby, Gavin managed the senior tens team that travelled to Hawaii.

Cassie Murphy followed in her father’s footsteps—despite his initial attempts to steer her toward law—and joined Gee & Hickton as a Funeral Director. A decade later, she has worked in nearly every role within the business and now serves as Manager for the Lower and Upper Hutt branches.

Keeping it in the family, daughter and sister Freya did pursue law—much to Petone Rugby’s benefit. Now in her second season as the Club’s Solicitor, her expertise is invaluable.

From a playing perspective, both Cassie and Freya’s partners have proudly worn the saddle on many occasions.

A huge thank you to Gavin, Cassie, the Murphy family, and Gee & Hickton for your ongoing support. We’re grateful to have you as part of the Petone Rugby community! geeandhickton.co.nz
