Welcome to The Village Viewpoint sponsored by Gavin and Cassie Murphy and the team at Gee and Hickton Ltd Funeral Directors, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, and Porirua.

Our Premier Women, Back to Back Champions! An unbelievable season from the Ponies, they finish 2025 with all 3 available trophies in the cabinet. The team, chocka full of young talent, tested veterans and some exciting representative footballers should be immensely proud of their efforts, the club sure is! Special mention to the management, coaches Fred, Shannon and Eugene, trainer Alex Telea and the amazing manager, the glue who holds everything together, Elieta.

Up the road and over the bridge our Prems and Prem 2's take on HOBM from 1pm. I don't need to hype McBain, you guys know the deal, and with both teams coming off agonising losses and home semi spots up for grabs this McBain Shield is shaping up to be one for the ages. What you might not know is with 1 round to play our table topping B's sit just 4 points clear of Poneke(Who face much lower seeded Norths) and 5 points clear of OBU & HOBM, so it all comes down to this, a win all but guaranteeing them the regular season champions Harper Lock Shield! Best of luck men.

HOBM and their supporters always get up for this weekend so get out to the Hutt Rec and make your presence felt!

#BattleoftheBridge

And then there were four. Congratulations to the Ponies, their incredible coaching staff, and supporters after their comprehensive win in the final on Saturday. They were made to work for it, but their superior fitness won out in the second half and were able to put the game to bed, with Keira Su’a Smith winning the MVP of the final. Though the club season is over for these girls, 14 (!) of the Ponies have been named in the Wellington Pride wider squad, so we will be cheering them on.

Let’s start talking about our home games this week where the Colts take on table-toppers, Tawa. Tawa have been the dominant side in the Under 21 grade this season, but our lads have shown good recent form, winning their last four matches fairly comfortably after their last loss at Upper Hutt. A win this week will almost certainly guarantee a spot in the top four as we are currently five points clear of fifth-placed Poneke with a game in hand.

The Brotherhood were annoyingly defaulted to last week by Norths, so will be desperate for a good hit-out this weekend vs The Axemen. Brent has got a good mix of youth and experience in the squad and has these boys humming. Wellington will be no pushover as they are tied with us at the top of Division 1. Hopefully this could be a finals preview if the lads continue their good form. This match will be on at 2:45pm at the Rec, so if you don’t want to brave the parking situation at the Hutt Rec, come down and support the team.

The Prem Reserves have a chance to wrap up their first round with a win this week vs HOBM. Even two bonus points will secure the silverware, but that may seem a little hollow when the battle is against the boys from over the bridge. Much like the Brent and the Brotherhood, Siu, 00 and Benny have a fantastic mix of youth and experience that has worked brilliantly so far. There is a real belief in this team that is apparent when you watch them play, and they seem to have morphed into the demeanor of their coaches; quiet and understated, but exceedingly competent. Here’s hoping for the Harper Lock Shield to be raised in this curtain-raiser.

As Hack said, there isn’t much to be talked about for our Prems. It’s McBain. Get over the Ewen Bridge and make yourselves heard. Go well.

Legendary All Black Billy Wallace described Alexander McBain as “the grandfather of school rugby.” McBain was born in Scotland in 1868 and migrated to New Zealand in 1892. He was a schoolteacher for 45 years, culminating in being headmaster of Eastern Hutt School from 1915-1931. A leading referee, coach, and rugby advocate, he was the President of the Hutt Club and Vice-President of the Wellington Rugby Football Union. In 1933, he died. A year later, Hector McBain (Alexander’s son) and Thomas Bevan presented a Shield to the Hutt and Petone clubs to “foster good fellowship.” The McBain Shield has been a highly anticipated fixture since. The first McBain was won by Hutt 6-5 in a match described as a “Homeric struggle.” Between 1953 and 1984, Petone won the Jubilee Cup 14 times and never relinquished the McBain. Petone was so dominant that even their third side often played and defeated Hutt. Since 2000, Hutt has claimed half of their 20 McBain wins. Petone has won the game 64 times, with the last of five draws in 1987.

Congratulations to all of our Ponies selected to represent Wellington yesterday. Well deserved ladies.

Not great news on the Grandstand front, at a meeting on Wednesday the Parks Committee of the council mentioned they already spent around $200,000 on engineers reports and consultants, and think they will need to spend quadruple that to be in a position to begin the Structural repairs. These consultants cost are eating into the fund to do the actual work at an alarming rate. Stay tuned for more.

If you haven't already please sign the petition to save the Grandstand here https://chng.it/vYdXjNgxLH Please join us in advocating for the protection and re-strengthening of Petone's Grandstand. Let's ensure it continues to serve our community for future generations.

Preserving the Grandstand is a crucial step towards respecting our community’s past while investing in its future. Let’s rally together to safeguard this important piece of our cultural and physical landscape.

Congrats Steve, what a servant. A couple supercharges on us this Saturday!

Jarrod Hrstich, aka 'Jaz', 'Crazy', 'The Old Master' plays his 100th game this Saturday. A write up that does this man justice is nigh impossible.

He's been putting his body on the line for the senior club for almost 2 decades. Jarrod comes from proud PRFC lineage, the Petone Junior coming back to the club after his high school years at Hutt International Boys and Wellington College.

After colts Jarrod had success with strong Prem Reserve sides, picking up multiple Ed Chaney Trophies. His transition to Premier rugby was seamless and he has been a staple ever since his debut against Tawa in 2015.

An ultimate club man, Jarrod has jumped around the loose forward spots and hooker, willing to plug gaps wherever and whenever the club asks. His physicality and ability to win the collision even against more sizable opposition is a feature of his game.

McBain this Saturday is monumental enough, without the added spice of one of Petone's favourite sons 100th cap, the boys will be fizzing, this game is going to be a doozy. Both teams will want to get their hands on the old wooden shield and potentially lock in a home semi for the NRL style finals format.

Tēnā rawa atu koe Jarrod, thank you for your years of service to the club and community. Special mention to Haley and the girls for letting us borrow him every Tuesday and Thursday night and the bulk of Saturday.

Jarrod's presentation will be back at the Petone club rooms this Saturday night following the McBain aftermatch formalities at the Hutt Rec.

Cheers Crazy
