Cullen Breakfast and Strengthening Democracy Project

I am proud to acknowledge five of our senior students who recently achieved 3rd place in the Wellington regional Strengthening Democracy Project. This prestigious initiative, connected to the Peter Cullen Breakfasts, encourages young people to explore and promote democratic values in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our students impressed the judges with their video and essay, which focused on supporting migrant communities to better understand their civic responsibilities and democratic rights. Their success highlights the power of youth voice in shaping our shared future. I wish to congratulate Ambar, Izarra, Kristina, Luciana and Rosa for all their hard work in addressing this really important issue (pictured with Hon Nicola Willis and Peter Cullen).

Strategic Plan 2026 - 2028

The Board is in the process of reviewing and updating its strategic plan, which will run from 2026 - 2028. This is the Board’s governing document that sets out its priorities over the next 3 years. We would very much appreciate your thoughts on what you think we have achieved so far in terms of our current strategic plan, and where you think we need to focus going forward. Please click on this link which will take you to a Google Form - we would love to hear from you!

We will also be sending out a separate email to all parents and caregivers on Monday morning, 28 July, with more information about how you can contribute to our Strategic Plan. This will include details of two evening focus group sessions that will be running on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 August from 5:30pm to 7pm in the college staffroom. More details to follow on Monday.

Year 10 - Learning from home day - Tuesday 2nd September

On Tuesday 2 September we are running the NCEA writing corequisite assessment for approximately 300 students from years 10 - 13.

Due to the number of rooms required for students to sit the assessment, and the constraints that we are currently facing due to building remediation works, we cannot facilitate the assessment and all timetabled classes. To ensure that all eligible students get the space and time to sit this assessment fairly, we have scheduled year 10 to be learning from home on that day. This means that if your child is sitting the writing corequisite (you will be informed of this in the coming weeks), they only need to attend school during that time.

The assessment will be held from 11am to 1:35pm (approximately). Students will be required to stay in the assessment for a minimum of one hour. After that, year 10 students will be free to leave when they have finished.

During the day, we will also make space available in the school library for any students who are not yet 14 and are therefore unable to stay at home unsupervised. Students who have come into school for their assessment can also use this space before/after.

Our Kids Online?

You may remember that we held a parents / caregivers information evening with a local online safety expert Rob Cope, earlier this year. Those who attended found Rob’s talk invaluable and full of great tips and advice around how to keep your kids safe in an increasingly complex digital world. Central to that is how they use their mobile phone and I thought this video below was too good not to share. I would urge every parent to watch it and learn ways in which you can help keep your children safe online. Rob releases videos like this each week and I will share those most relevant to parents through this newsletter. If you want to know more about Rob’s work you can visit his website: https://www.ourkidsonline.info/
