Shoe Clinic Race 5-Riverton

32 Runners Participated on Saturday.

7 Volunteers assisted during the setup and running of the event.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered, or cheered on all our participants on Saturday at Taramea/Howells Point, especially Graham and Alison Nielson who set the fantastic course. The Riverton course is truly a highlight event of the season, there is a little bit of everything for everyone. Slick grass, twists and turns, gravel, sandy hills and best of all spectacular scenery. It was hard to watch your running step across the water front when the the waves crashing on the rocks of Taramea Bay were so spectacular. Riverton always delivers, this is event is a must on our handicap calendar.

From the rocks at the top of the first hill, spectators watched as our juniors chased each other around the approximately 2.2km loop. Thank You Addy for keeping an eye on our young ones, your support was much appreciated.

It was great to see new faces this far into the season in both our junior and senior race. I hope you all got a wee taste of what Southland Harriers is all about, a group of friendly people from 6 to 80 who love to run, the more challenging the course, the happier we seem to get.

The Seniors completed 3 laps of the 2.2kms, plus a short but challenging sandy hill climb.  Runners could choose whether they completed this climb during their first, second or third lap. Most tackled it in the first but their are a few who waited.  We do wonder how that strategy went as the legs were definitely burning as the run went on, but strategy is strategy.

By all accounts the Southland Chair may have “burgled” this handicap event with a very generous handicap, but otherwise there was some quality handicapping as always, and in our handicappers defense our Chair has not done a lot of running this year, so no so easy to figure out how she might go.
