The Joy of Discomfort

As I travelled with 30 students on our annual visit to Befu Elementary in Japan, I was once again reminded of the joys of being outside of our comfort zone. Life can become very comfortable, which is lovely and nice, but during these times, we aren't necessarily pushing ourselves to face new challenges and to encourage new learning. It is times of struggle or discomfort when real learning takes place. It is during these moments that we start to reflect on what we value, what others value, and how we and others see the world. A valuable lesson, particularly as many places around the world become more unsettled and inward-looking.

Whilst being uncomfortable can be challenging at the time, the sense of personal achievement and satisfaction is immensely rewarding and fills us with a sense of real pride and joy. I was incredibly proud of our young people and their willingness to push themselves to try new things with an open mind and with great respect. This trip was a fantastic reminder that life is there to be lived, and experiences like these should be embraced with open arms and minds. I certainly found myself reflecting on when I last pushed myself to experience the joy of discomfort.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES UPDATE - AUGUST 2025

At the August Board meeting, several important matters were discussed and agreed upon:

  • Strategic Planning & Surveys: The Board reviewed initial feedback from recent staff, student, and community surveys (as the surveys had only recently closed). The insights will inform the school's next strategic planning and capital projects planning cycles, with a focus on upcoming curriculum changes and new assessment tools. The Community survey responses highlighted strengths in school culture and teaching, with suggestions for improvement in sports, extracurricular activities, and communication. The survey responses will be reviewed in more detail in the coming weeks. Thank you to all our community members who took the time to complete the survey.

  • School Donation for 2026: The Board approved a modest increase in the school donation for 2026 from $550 to $560, in response to rising operational costs.  Thank you to all families who have paid their 2025 donations. The school could not provide the broad range of programmes it does without it.

  • Student Achievement: The Board celebrated strong mid-year results in Maths and Reading for both Year 7 and Year 8, acknowledging the dedication of teaching staff to achieve these great results.

  • Board Elections: With elections underway for 3 new Board Members, the Board acknowledged and thanked outgoing Board members Carl Vink and Issa llo- Cabiling for their commitment to Remuera Intermediate.

THE RI TALENT QUEST

WHAT A SPECTACULAR EVENING

The red carpet was rolled out, microphones switched on and flashing lights were ready.

Our myriad of awesome students took to the stage to showcase their vast array of talents. We had singers, dancers, bands, pianists even a magician and an adorable dog act.

The show was a huge success and we were very proud of everyone who took part; from the performers, production manager, sound technicians, lighting crew, media crew, prop coordinators, performing teachers, judges and of course our community supporters.

Thank you to our three judges, Brianna King, Karl Benton and Jaden McLeod, who selected our winners. This was a very daunting task as the standard was incredibly high across all areas.

We would also like to thank our PTA, who continue to support our students and school in so many ways, providing the prizes for the RI Talent Show.

Our first place winners on the night were:
Ella Mills Contemporary Dance Soloist

YEAR 7 SPEECH FINALS

After weeks of preparation, we were able to find out who was going to be crowned the 2025 Speech Winner.

The road to the final was a tough one as our speakers needed to win their class speech competition, and then go on to be selected to represent their syndicate.

Students were able to choose their own topic to speak on and to speak for between 2:30 and 3:30 minutes. Speakers would also be judged on delivery, use of voice and gestures, content of the speech and audience engagement.

Room 26:      Tiffany Zou - “Luck”
Room 17:      Arianna Chin “Team Work Makes the Dream Work”

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE ART ROOM

Year 8 extension students are working up some canvases with paint and pastel, based around close-ups of some plants Mrs Sturgiss photographed on her trip to Bali this year.

MOUNTAIN BIKING NEWS

That's a wrap for the Mountain Biking season for 2025, and what a fun season it has been. It’s been great to see new people join Mountain Biking this year. Race number 5 resulted in top 10 finishes for Abigail Muir (2nd), Liam McIvor (3rd), and Tyler Treagus (7th).

The R.I.ders relay team of Tyler Treagus, Ben Downey, and Liam McIvor rode in exceptionally windy conditions and took out 2nd place, and Liam McIvor finished the season with a 3rd place overall ranking.

EAST WING TRIP TO MOUNT HOBSON

In Week 8, the East Wing set off on a Hīkoi along Remuera Road to the summit of Ōhinerau / Mt Hobson. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore local historical sites while practising their tour guide skills.

Each student researched a place of historical interest and presented an entertaining tour guide speech to the group.

Highlights included visiting Cotter House (built in 1848 and one of Auckland’s oldest homes), Saint Aidan’s Church (built in 1905), and other familiar landmarks such as the Village Green, Coles Building, the old Post Office, and King’s School.

At the summit of Ōhinerau, students learned about its history as a thriving pā in the 1400s, home to around 1,000 people with terraces, storage pits, and kūmara gardens. They also discovered the story of the great feast held at the base of Ōhinerau in 1844.

It was a fantastic day of learning and connection to our local history. A huge thank you to our wonderful parent helpers who supported us, and to the amazing Robert Rasmussen, Yvonne Gallagher, and Zach Baldwin, who stepped in to help and also shared their knowledge of Remuera along the way!

REMUERA INTERMEDIATE SKI TEAM

Three talented students from Remuera Intermediate, Hayden Barber, Storm Skinner, and Will Xu, competed in the North Island Primary & Intermediate School Ski Championships (NIPS) from August 25-27, 2025.

This was the first time the school had participated in six years. Based at the Levin Waiopehu lodge on Mount Ruapehu, our team faced challenging snow conditions that tested their skills and determination.

At the event in Whakapapa Ski Field, all three students had impressive individual performances. Hayden won second place in the rail jam, while Storm placed 15th in the Giant Slalom and 14th in the Dual Slalom.

Will had the best finishes, securing an impressive 5th place in the Giant Slalom and a 3rd place bronze medal in the Dual Slalom.
As a team, the three students helped Remuera Intermediate achieve an exceptional 6th place overall out of 20 Year 7-8 schools, a remarkable achievement for first-time competitors facing such challenging mountain conditions.

Special thanks to Suzy Barber, Chris Skinner and Sean Xu for supporting the team at this event and to Levin Waiopehu Tramping Club for hosting the team at their wonderful lodge.

2025 CENTRAL AUCKLAND PRIMARY & INTERMEDIATE TABLE TENNIS COMPETITION

The 2025 Central Auckland Primary & Intermediate Table Tennis Team Competition was held over eight weeks, featuring three grades (A, B, and C). The tournament followed a league format, where each team played against every other team to determine the overall winners. Schools from across the central zone, along with Auckland squad teams, participated—making it one of the most competitive events on the calendar.

In the A Grade, Suhas Samarakkody represented the Combo Eagle Team, which had an exceptional run throughout the competition. They played better Table Tennis compared to all central zone schools as well as two Auckland squad teams, demonstrating outstanding skill, discipline, and teamwork. Their level of play stood out as unmatched within the A Grade category.

In the C Grade, Remuera Intermediate – Team 4 emerged as champions after defeating all their opponents, many of whom were boys’ or mixed-gender teams. Players Amelia Zhou, Dhriya Khemlani, and Aarvi Varshney displayed remarkable skill, patience, and perseverance throughout the tournament, which paid off with a thoroughly deserved victory.

The competition not only highlighted the sporting talent within our schools but also showcased the values of teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship. Congratulations to all players for their fantastic achievements!
