PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Looking Back with Pride
As we come to the end of another full and busy year at Remuera Intermediate, it’s a great moment to pause and reflect on what has made 2025 so special. Across classrooms, the playground, the field, the courts, and our wider community events, our students have consistently shown a positive attitude toward learning and toward one another.

We have seen students step up, keep trying when things were challenging, and celebrate each other’s successes. Their optimism, effort, and kindness have been a real strength this year.

I also want to acknowledge the generally high standards of behaviour and integrity shown by our students. The way our young people have carried themselves this year has had a very positive impact.

Whether it has been in how students treat one another, interact with staff, represent the school at events, or take responsibility for their choices, they have consistently demonstrated our values. It really is something to be proud of, and it sets a tone that helps everyone feel safe, welcome, and ready to learn.

A school is never just its students. The successes of this year have been made possible by a dedicated staff who give their best day after day.

To every teacher, support staff member, office team member, learning assistant, caretaker, and all those who quietly keep things running, we sincerely thank you.  Your commitment, support, and dedication to our students make this place what it is.

We are also deeply grateful to the many people in our community who support everything we do. Parents and whānau, volunteers, coaches, local partners, and friends of the school, your encouragement and involvement are much appreciated.

In two short weeks, our Year 8 students will be heading off to the next stage of their journey. To our Year 8’s, you have made your mark on this school. You’ve grown in maturity, confidence, and responsibility, and you have contributed to the culture of Remuera Intermediate in so many ways.

We will miss your energy, your humour, your leadership, and the example you’ve set. As you move on, take with you the friendships you’ve built, the lessons you’ve learned, and the pride of knowing you leave this school better than you found it. We wish you every success for the exciting years ahead.

To our Year 7 students, next year it will be your turn to step into the role of school leaders. This is an exciting opportunity. Leadership is not only about badges, positions, or leading from the front. It’s about the choices you make every day and the example you set for others.

I encourage you to keep our values of Reliability, Integrity, and Service strong. Be the students who can be counted on, who do the right thing even when no one is watching, and who look for ways to help others.

Most importantly, be great role models for the new Year 7s joining us next year. They will look to you to understand what it means to be a RI student, show them through your actions, your attitude, and the pride you take in our school.

As we head into the final stretch of the year, I want every student to know how proud we are of what you’ve achieved, academically, socially, and as individuals.

This year has been full of learning and growth, and the way our school community has worked together has been a real highlight.

Thank you all for making 2025 a year to remember.

YEAR 8 SOCIAL

On Thursday, 30th October, RI held a very successful Year 8 social dance in the school hall. The event was extremely well-attended, and those who purchased a ticket had a great time.

The Company that provided the DJ, Auckland DJ Services, emailed after the event to say,
‘Your school discos are always epic - you throw so much energy into them, lighting, smoke,  the works. The team always tells me that yours is the best disco on their calendar.’

Which is great feedback, but the stars of the show were the students, whose enthusiasm and energy really made the night the success that it was.

A very big thanks to all those who attended and to the teachers who gave up their time to prepare the hall and supervise on the night.

YEAR 8 STUDENTS IN THE GARDEN

It’s spring and the perfect season for planting our vegetable and herb seeds and seedlings.

Year 8 Garden to Table students have been busy preparing the ground for planting, weeding, and tilling the soil.

Broccoli, garlic, snowpeas, courgettes, beetroot, and lots of potatoes have been planted over the past month or so. With the warm, wet weather conditions we are seeing, rapid growth and we’ve even been able to harvest snowpeas and courgettes already!

ATHLETICS DAY

Competitive

On Tuesday, November 11th, Remuera Intermediate students showcased their talent and dedication at the Competitive Athletics competition held at Lloyd Elsmore Park. Participants gave it their all across a variety of running and field events. The day was a fantastic display of determination and school spirit as every student worked hard to achieve their personal bests and enthusiastically supported their fellow students.

It was a great showcase of effort, sportsmanship, and friendly competition.
The most successful students from this event now have the exciting opportunity to advance and compete at the Central Zone competition later in November.

Non Competitive

This year, around 500 students took to the school field for our annual Non-Competitive Athletics Day! From multi-sports and frisbee target to Capture the Flag and dodgeball, the day was packed with high-action fun, laughter, and friendly competition. The events focused on teamwork, participation, and school spirit- and it definitely showed!

A huge congratulations to Room 12 and Room 22, this year’s class competition champions!

CZ ATHLETICS

On Wednesday, 19th November, a large team of over 50 Athletes competed at Central Zone Athletics, which was held at Mount Smart Stadium.
We had an amazing day and all the students who completed did so with enthusiasm, skill and determination.

There were some outstanding results achieved, with a large number of athletes gaining a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their event. After an interesting start to the day with a lost bus, it was so great to see our students cheering each other on from the stands. We look forward to several of our athletes now representing our school at the Interzone Competition.

INTERZONE ATHLETICS

On Thursday, 27th November, 19 students went on to participate in the Auckland Interzone Champion of Champions Athletics event. Once again, all athletes competed with pride, determination and excellence. To qualify for this event is a massive achievement and all those who participated should be extremely proud of themselves.

A special mention to Isaac Martin and Aston Prescott, who both placed at this event.

Aston also managed to break the Interzone Record, reaching a soaring height of 1.61m in the Year 7 Boys High Jump.

Results:
Year 7 Boys: Aston Prescott - 1st place in High Jump (interzone record of 1.61m)

Year 8 Boys: Isaac Martin - 1st place in 400m and 2nd place in 1500m

ANNUAL SERVICE AWARDS

On Monday, 24 November, our whole school assembly became the stage for a wonderful celebration of character as we recognized the recipients of the Annual Service Awards. This worthy award highlights students who consistently demonstrate the core values of our school community: Reliability, Integrity, and Service.

Each class had the honor of nominating one student who best embodied these qualities—from quietly helping a peer with a difficult task to reliably assisting teachers with classroom duties. These acts of service are the threads that strengthen our school's fabric.

The award recipients were presented with a very special gift, generously sponsored by our PTA: a copy of the latest book, The Last Journey, by famous New Zealand author Stacey Gregg. The awards were proudly presented by our current PTA Chair, Adeline Martin.

The excitement didn't end with the assembly! The award recipients attended an exclusive mini-workshop afterward. The highlight of the event was having their new book signed in person by Stacey Gregg, providing an unforgettable moment for our young service leaders.

We extend our sincere thanks to the PTA for their continuous and invaluable support of our school and our students. The PTA also kindly donated three signed copies of The Last Journey to our school library, ensuring that many more students will have the chance to be inspired by this fantastic book.

MULTI MATERIALS WRAP UP

Year 8 students in Cycle 3 Multi Materials are ending the year on a high as they complete all of their projects to a good standard. The workshop has been humming with activity as students express their creativity and extend their knowledge of practical processes and procedures. Well done to all the students who have safely constructed their projects to completion this year.

PERFORMANCE NEWS

Twenty Year 8 students, along with others supporting them with adjusting sound, lighting, and backgrounds, performed their new show 'Better than Brainrot' for the whole school on 27 November.

The show was vibrant, humorous, and entertaining, filled with songs that the audience was familiar with. It was well received by the audience, particularly the dancing. The group is thankful to Mr Zemke for guiding them throughout their Starburst journey.

A MASSIVE THANK YOU

On behalf of Remuera Intermediate and The Blues, we would like to extend a massive thank you for the incredibly generous donations made this year.

We (and The Blues) were overwhelmed by the number of food items that were brought in, both on our Mufti Day and throughout the collection campaign.

This is going to make a huge difference to those families in need, especially as we head into the holiday season.

Once again, thank you to everyone who donated to this worthy cause.
