Race 4- Shoe Clinic Series Riverton
A Hearty 25 Runners and 6 Volunteers Participated
Thank you Graham and Alison Nielson for the amazing course design and race set up. It takes many hands to put together the season and we love the Riverton event and everything you do for the Southland Harriers.
Race report courtesy of Ian Densie…….
After all the weather warnings, showers, possible thunderstorms and strong winds… we were treated to an absolutely stunning afternoon! Sunny, warm and, yes, a tad windy — but most importantly, the rain stayed away!
The ground, however, was a different story…Calling it wet underfoot might be a slight understatement. In horse racing terms, we may have been looking at Heavy… Muddy… or perhaps even Sloppy!
Despite the conditions, a small but incredibly high-quality, tough and dedicated group of runners turned up ready to tackle the challenge.
10 Juniors 15 Seniors
JUNIOR RACE
Tui Stowe – 16:04
Peyton Gilmour – 16:16
Benji Barclay – 16:51
Fastest Junior time: Freya Gilmour – 9:03
A huge congratulations to Tui, who joined us for her first Southland Harriers event and came away with the win! Peyton was hot on her heels, with just 12 seconds separating first and second.
SENIOR RACE
Jason Collum – 44:04
Debbie Telfer – 46:29
Lachie Watson – 47:42
Fastest Senior time: Cayden Sanginiti – 24:27
Another newcomer taking the win!
Jason has travelled all the way from Canada, and we thought we had handicapped him pretty hard based on the estimated pace we were given… Apparently not! Jason rose to the challenge and powered his way through the field to take the win. But remember Jason… they say you won’t win two handicap races in a row! Expect a slightly tougher start time at the next event! Lachie led in an incredibly tight bunch of runners, with 10 seniors finishing between 47:42 and 48:43. Now that's some close racing!
Overall, despite a couple of outliers in both races, the handicapping worked really well and produced some great racing.
