Our Otago Senior Representative campaigns got underway last week & what a start to the season!
The annual Bates (Men) & Henderson (Women) Shield games v Southland were played at Hancock Park on Sunday, and all teams put on some awesome ball!
OTAGO SENIOR MEN
Leading into the Bates, our Senior Men had a great warm up game with youngster Phoenix Wardell on the mound as the Men were unfortunately hit with injury of key pitchers Jacob Wedlock taking him out of the mix, and Devon Robinson injuring his knee the day before. Keeping Southland at bay with a 3-all score with runs from Patrick Oxley, Zach Oxley & Caleb Leddie up until the 6th, Southland then got on the bats finishing the game 7-3
Heading into the Bates game, Southland were strong on the bats from the 2nd innings bringing in 5 runs with Otago replying with Baden Oxley crossing the plate from a hit by Caleb Leddie, taking the score to 5-1
Otago kept their composure to hold Southland for the next 2 innings when Southland then brought in another 4 runs to take the win, and the Shield home with a score of 9-1
OTAGO SENIOR WOMEN
Otago Women were strong from the outset in the warm up game with Marissa Ahlfeld on the mound with Terena Ramsay coming on in relief. The Women were dominant throughout the game, especially on the bats to take the win confidently 12-6
Taking that momentum into the Henderson game, Otago brought in 9 runs in the first 2 innings with Zillah Conder & Team Price being key batters in helping the Women to take a confident lead, and with Kaitlyn Hastie on the mound, Otago kept Southland at bay. Marissa Ahlfeld coming on in relief keeping the momentum going to finish with a 10-3 mercy rule win
Otago Women taking the win & the Henderson Shield, for the first time since 1997
Both teams will now travel to Christchurch in December to compete in the South Island Provincial Championships!
