NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

9th May 2022

What a great way to start the season with great weather all weekend and some great Rugby played by all 9 of our teams on Club Day. A huge thank you to all our coaches, managers, parents, old boys and staff for helping make this day a success. We also welcomed all our 2022 Sponsors to Nelson College for a pre-1st XV game morning tea with Scott Gibbons and Jono Phillips presenting to them about what is being offered for boys attending this school through Rugby both on the field and off it. We thank all of these sponsors for their contribution toward making our programme a positive experience for all Rugby players at Nelson College.

Game of the Week

The weekend kicked off on Friday afternoon with our U17 Cambridge team playing U17 Kahurangi. This proved to be a great game with lots of boys staying after school to watch their friends play. Kahurangi lead early scoring 3 excellent tries and went into the half up 19-5 and soon after 24-5 before Cambridge found their form, running in some superb tries to lead 31-29 with only minutes to spare. Kahurangi didn't give up and managed to force a penalty on full time, around 25 metres out from the posts. Milan Petterson calmly converted the penalty and Kahurangi took the win 32-31! What a game.

1st XV Report

The 1st XV, with the majority of players debuting in the Miles Toyota Championship came our firing against St Andrew's College on Saturday. Defending the Trustee Bank Cup, which the team won off St Andrew's in the first game of the season later year in Christchurch, the boys were not going to give them a chance to regain it. Lead well by Co-Captains Nelesoni Malaulau & Dane Leppien, the team established a good lead in the first half and never let it go, winning 36-13. Well done to the team on an excellent win. For a report on the match, please click here Nelson App. The teams next game is against Timaru Boys' High School in Timaru on Tuesday 17th May. Please see another article here from the Nelson Weekly on the upcoming season.

NELSON COLLEGE CLUB REPORT

The season is shaping up well for our Nelson College teams based on the results over the weekend. There were some really tight games and some excellent Rugby played. This weekend coming sees a number of our teams playing away from home with two teams travelling to Marlborough Boys' College. Please know that Nelson College Rugby provides transport for teams in the way of vans or if required, a bus to transport teams safely to their matches. If your son requires transport, please make sure they inform the coaches at training. Thank you.

Referees & Associate Refereeing 2022

Due to many factors including Covid the Tasman Region is very short of Referees (especially in Nelson) this season. This will mean that it is unlikely that games below Under 14 will have appointed referees, and in some cases may not be appointed to grades above this. To check whether you have an appointed referee please check the TRU website, in the draws section each week. If a Tasman Referee is not appointed then it is the home teams responsibility to organise a referee, preferably an Associate Referee.

If you are interested in learning to referee and want to become an Associate Referee, there is a course on Thursday 12 May at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms, Richmond starting at 6.30pm. To enrol please email Rugby Referee manager Dave Paterson at reo@tasmanrugby.co.nz

NEW Experimental Domestic Safety Law Variations (EDSLV's)

This season there are some new EDSLV’s that apply to teenage and junior rugby. Here is a link so you can see what applies to teenage (Under 14-17).
