Female Rugby is the fastest growing area of our game and Canterbury Rugby has a variety of girls only and mixed grades with both contact and non-contact versions of the game available ensuring that no matter your age, skill or experience, rugby is enjoyable.
Girls can play in all our Junior Grades from Under 6 through to Under 13 which include the Rippa, Rip Rugby and Small Blacks versions of the game. We are also proud to offer Girls only grades at Primary (8 - 10 years) Intermediate (11 - 12 years) and Senior (13 - 16 years) & one of the largest Womens open grades in the Country, which has two grades in 2022 as well as a strong Secondary School Girls Rugby competition.
Rippa Rugby is non-contact and easy-to-play. While the rules are simple and the game easy to learn, Rippa Rugby promotes excellent ball handling and running skills and gives all players a chance to participate in a game similar to Rugby Sevens. Under 6 and Under 7 grades are Rippa Rugby, along with specific Under 8/9 and Under 10/11 Rip Rugby grades which is a non-contact version similar to Rugby Sevens. These older grades have been created for children that wish to continue playing non-contact rugby for longer.
Once children join the Under 8 grade, they have a Tackle Clinic prior to the season before tackling is introduced into their games which continues through the all the grades above (other than those specifically for Rip Rugby). Each of the grades have slightly different conditions and rules. Click here to learn more about the differences between grades. Our three Sub-Unions (Ellesmere, Metro and North Canterbury) manage various grades within this age range. Click here to see what Junior grades each Sub Union manages.
Canterbury Rugby's girls/women's-only grades are combined with all three Sub-Unions. These are Primary Girls (U9 - U11) Intermediate Girls (U11 - U13), Senior Girls (U14 - U17) and the Canstaff Women's competition (Senior, 18+ years). There is also a girls' First XV competition, which includes High Schools throughout the Crusaders region, called the Miles Toyota Cup. Please see below to see which Clubs currently offer girls/women's-only rugby.
