JULIE PATTERSON APPOINTED NEW CRFU VICE-PRESIDENT

Canterbury Rugby’s 2016 Volunteer of the Year, Julie Patterson, has been appointed to the role of Vice-President of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU).

CRFU Chairman Trevor McIntyre said Patterson (JP) had made an outstanding contribution to the union over a number of years, initially as a player and then as a volunteer, and would no doubt continue to have a positive influence on Canterbury Rugby in her new role.

“JP is a long standing member of the Metro Judicial Committee, having served for 20 years.  She works tirelessly, week in week out, during the season presiding over judicial hearings and then writing up many of the findings.  Julie has also performed the role of Citing Liaison Officer for Internationals, Investec Super Rugby, Mitre 10 Cup and Farah Palmer Cup home games for the last three years.

“She is an active member of the Old Maroons Association and the University RFC and takes a keen interest in all aspects of rugby having played at club and provincial level for Canterbury. She will bring a depth of knowledge of the game and a high degree of professionalism to this role.  We are thrilled with this appointment,” Mr McIntyre said.

Canterbury Rugby CEO Nathan Godfrey said Patterson would become the first female Official appointed to the CRFU in its 137 year history.

“This decision certainly supports my vision for the future of the CRFU.  I believe we can benefit from being a more inclusive and community-minded union, and encouraging the growth of Women’s Rugby in this region is a primary focus for me in my first year in this role.  I know that is a passion that JP shares and will be able to have a real influence over in the Vice-President role.  JP is, and will continue to be, a fantastic role model for future generations of rugby players and administrators in this region.  I am very much looking forward to working with her,” Mr Godfrey said.

Patterson said she was honoured and humbled by the appointment: “Rugby has always been a big part of my life, from my early years supporting Southbridge, my playing days for the University Club and Canterbury, and various volunteer roles over the last thirty years.   I have always been happy to contribute and this is another way of doing so for the game that I love.  I’m looking forward to representing the Canterbury Rugby community and hope to make all those people who have supported and encouraged me over the years proud.”

Julie Patterson replaces Vance Stewart as Vice-President.  Stewart has been promoted to CRFU President to replace Wayne Burleigh, who has completed his two year term.
