Peter Anthony Garty1 April 1953 – 10 June 2026

Cricket Wellington received with sorrow the news that former Chairman Peter Garty passed away on Wednesday after a period of ill health. Peter played for the University Cricket Club in Wellington, mostly in the lower grades, and had a lifelong interest in many sports, especially cricket, rugby, and golf.

A chartered accountant, Peter was a director of several Wellington-based companies and served as Telecom’s Group Financial Controller until 2008. He was Wellington City Council’s Chief Financial Officer from 2009 to 2013.

First elected to the Cricket Wellington Board in 2004, Peter succeeded Ian Wells as Chairman from 2011 to 2015. He was made a Vice President at the 2015 AGM.

Peter was a proficient all-round sportsman and played for the Victoria University Rugby Club as a first five-eighth or fullback. He made two appearances for Wellington B in 1978. Involved with New Zealand Universities Rugby Inc. as Treasurer for many years, Peter was made a Life Member of NZUR in 2017.
