Celebrating 150 Years of Cricket in the Capital
This summer, Cricket Wellington proudly celebrates 150 Years of Cricket in the Capital.
Since its establishment in 1875 by cricket clubs from across the Wellington region, Cricket Wellington has grown alongside our communities and the game itself. Our 150th Anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the clubs that laid our foundations, acknowledge the generations of players, volunteers, officials, administrators, members and supporters who have shaped our organisation, and reflect on the moments that have made Cricket Wellington what it is today.
The centrepiece of our celebrations will be the Cricket Wellington 150th Anniversary Banquet, proudly hosted by Hon Chris Bishop at Parliament on 17 November 2026. The evening will bring together former players, current stars, Life Members, administrators, members, supporters and distinguished guests to celebrate the people, moments and achievements that have shaped Cricket Wellington over the past 150 years. Guests will enjoy fine dining, entertainment, historical reflections and special guest speakers as we recognise one of New Zealand's most historic and respected sporting organisations.
The celebrations won't stop there. The 2026/27 season promises to be one of the biggest in Cricket Wellington's history, with our 150th Anniversary providing the backdrop to an exciting Summer of Cricket. Fans can look forward to the BLACKCAPS taking on India in a historic Test Match at the Basin Reserve, the WHITE FERNS returning to Wellington to face Bangladesh, the BLACKCAPS taking on Sri Lanka later in the summer, another action-packed domestic season featuring the Wellington Firebirds and Wellington Blaze, and hundreds of community matches played by clubs across the Wellington region.
Throughout the summer we'll also unveil a range of special 150th Anniversary initiatives, including a limited-edition Super Smash playing jersey, commemorative merchandise, a book celebrating the past 50 years of Cricket Wellington, special events and activations, and much more to be revealed in the months ahead.
For 150 years, Cricket Wellington has been built by the passion and commitment of generations of clubs, players, volunteers, officials, administrators, members and supporters. This anniversary is an opportunity to honour that legacy, reconnect with those who have shaped our history, celebrate the stories that define us, and thank everyone who has contributed to Cricket Wellington's journey.
We'll be sharing further details over the coming week, including how to purchase tickets and join us at our 150th Anniversary Banquet at Parliament on 17 November. We look forward to celebrating this historic milestone with the wider cricket community throughout what promises to be a truly memorable Summer of Cricket.
