Gail Margaret Ives (née Heather)
24 May 1965 – 17 August 2026
The Wellington cricket community has been shocked to learn of the sudden passing of former club and representative player Gail Ives. Gail was a right-handed batter and off-spin bowler who played for Onslow Cricket Club in the 1980s and 1990s, where her father, Bruce, was a Life Member. She scored more than 3,000 runs and took more than 150 wickets for the club.
She played 28 two-day games for Wellington from 1982 to 1991, scoring 644 runs, including 102 not out against Canterbury at Palmerston North in December 1986, and taking 54 wickets, including 6-26 against Southern Districts at the same Hansells Cup tournament. Gail also played 18 one-day games for Wellington from 1986 to 1989.
Gail was a much-loved PE teacher at Wellington Girls’ College, where she had worked for more than 38 years. She was on a six-month overseas holiday with her husband, Richard, when she was struck by a car while out running in Los Angeles.
The condolences of all at Cricket Wellington go to Gail’s family and friends.
