East Tamaki and Pakuranga win their rugby grand finals - 2nd August, 2017


On a great day to remember, East Tamaki players are in fine voice as they celebrate their historic 31-10 victory over Papatoetoe to claim the Portola Trophy on Auckland club rugby premier grade finals day.

East Tamaki are the toast of the East Auckland sports scene this week having lifted a season-capping prize, the premier grade Portola Trophy on Auckland club rugby finals day last Saturday.

In good conditions at ET Domain, East Tamaki scored 31 (G Crichton 4, T Silipa tries; T Iosua 3 con) to Papatoetoe's 10 to claim their first trophy in senior grade in many seasons, much to the delight of the big crowd watching the exciting final.

In the top-flight Gallaher Shield grand final at Eden Park to decide the best club side in Auckland, University dismantled last year's champs Suburbs 39-18, scoring six tries to three.

The Jubilee Trophy final was a super try-fest, where defence disappeared from the game plans, as Eden swept to a historic 75-28 victory over Grammar TEC, touching down for 12 tries to four, after leading 44-0 at halftime. The Presidents Cup final went the way of Otahuhu 16-13 over Mt Wellington.

The premier development final for the George Nicholson Cup at Bell Park was won by Pakuranga 39-18 against Ponsonby, while the under-20 Bowl final was taken out by Pakuranga 24-21 over visitors Waitemata, making it a great night at United's headquarters.

Saint Kentigern College had an excellent 28-17 win away at Auckland Grammar and continue to lead the top-class secondary schools 1A grade. They have 34 points after nine rounds, closely tracked by Sacred Heart 32, St Peters 31, Kings and Grammar 29, in the top five.

St Kents tackle Aorere College at home on Saturday, 2.30pm, the visitors arriving on 8 points with two wins and seven losses.

In the 1B grade Championship, Botany Downs Secondary College push on undefeated after dominating Onehunga High 50-0 away, while Macleans College also won on the road at Papatoetoe High 27-10, and the eastside derby saw Tangaroa College clinching it 38-22 at Pakuranga College.

This Saturday's midday fixtures are Macleans v Onehunga, Tangaroa v One Tree Hill, and the big eastern rivalry Botany Downs v Pakuranga.

Howick College go up against Southern Cross at home in the 1B Plate, while Edgewater College cross town to take on Avondale.

The Howick Hornets got tipped over 26-28 against Marist Saints at home at Paparoa Park last Saturday in Auckland club rugby league premier grade.

Other SAS Fox Memorial round 16 results: Mt Albert 38 Richmond 10, Glenora 20 Pt Chevalier 20, Te Atatu 28 Mangere East 6, Papakura 18 Northcote 24. 

With two rounds to the playoffs, the Hornets remain in the top four, though in the past fortnight they've lost twice and face the table-topping Pirates of Pt Chevalier in what will be a top-quality battle at Paparoa Park this Saturday, 2.30pm.

Crown Lift Trucks Sharman Cup Plate round 12 saw the Pakuranga Jaguars lose 20-32 to Manukau at Ti Rakau Park, and they've got another bye this Saturday, in the five-team competition.

Football's NRFL second division kicks back into full action this Saturday, after last weekend's catch-up round, which saw Waiheke United close the gap to four as they chase Fencibles United to the championship crown, after securing promotion to the first division next year.

After 18 rounds and four to play, undefeated Fencibles have 48 points with 15 wins and three draws, to unbeaten Waiheke on 44, 13 wins and five draws. Waiheke beat Ngongotaha 4-1 last Saturday, while Fencibles had a weekend off.

Fencibles are away to nineth-placed Albany Utd at Rosedale Park, 3pm, this Saturday.

The honours were even in the men's national club ice hockey league double-header at Christchurch, with the visiting Botany Swarm losing 3-10 and then winning 6-4 over the Canterbury Red Devils.

In this weekend's last round of regular season matches, the Swarm's northern derby rivals, the West Auckland Admirals are the opponents at Paradice Arena, Botany, 4.55pm on Saturday and Sunday.
