Week 3 Term 2 2025

Tena anō tātou i te wā ngahuru o te tau, tīhei mauri ora.  Nau mai ra ki a koutou ki a tātou wāhanga tuarua o te tau.  Greetings to you all at this time of autumn, let us come together.  Welcome back to week three of our second term for the year.

Now that autumn is well and truly upon us and winter is fast approaching,  it’s time to put away our school sun hats and make sure we’ve got our Polar fleeces in our bags! The school is being blanketed each day with beautiful autumn leaves and we’ve enjoyed some cooler mornings but lovely clear days.

This term is a short term with nine weeks and some short weeks as well, so it will zoom by before we know it.

Ngā Ara Mātauranga (Place based curriculum) - Week 5 Term 2

Week 5 this term, our learning context across the curriculum will be based on our awa Ngaruroro and how its physicality transforms, from small springs of fresh water, small streams and eventually the river flow that carries itself to the sea.  Did you know that the actual name of the Ngaruroro awa is, ‘Ngaruroro Moko-tū-ā-raro ki Rangatira’

We will also unpack how water affects change in ourselves and some of the physical changes that happen to us as people as we grow, develop and change, and how these changes impact on the relationships that we have with each other.

Ka rere ana te awa o Ngaruroro mai i te wāhi tapu o ngā pae maunga o Kaimanawa ki te moana nui a kiwa.  We acknowledge and appreciate our awa Ngaruroro which flows from within the Kaimanawa ranges to the sea.

Reporting to Whānau

Thank you to the whānau who engage with their child’s seesaw. This platform is hugely important for a number of reasons. Not only is it how kaiako (teachers) and school communicate important messages with whānau, but also how the kaiako REPORT TO WHĀNAU ON THE PROGRESS BEING MADE ACROSS THE YEAR.

It is great to read the whānau comments being made to the learning progress that kaiako are sharing with whānau.. Progress happens EVERY DAY not just twice a year, and so our kaiako work hard to report progress and success with whānau. If you are not connected, please see your child’s classroom teacher(s).

Attendance

Every minute of the school day is important to your child's learning and more importantly to their relationships with their kaiako and classmates. Therefore it is important we work together to ensure our tamariki are at school every day.

If your child is sick or is going to be away from school, please contact the school office 8788 757.

Staff Only Day

We are holding our Staff Only Day this term on Friday 30th May (adding on to King’s Birthday weekend). As a staff we will be undertaking Professional Learning within the new Mathematics Curriculum.

Matariki Celebrations 2025

Planning is well underway for our Matariki Celebrations 2025. Please place Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th June in your calendar. It will be a time of learning and celebration for all tamariki and we want as many whānau members to join us.  More information to come week 6 so watch this space.

Mahi Tukutuku

Every Tuesday and Thursday a group of six kōtiro (girls) work together supported by Pare Rota to learn the art of tukutuku. Pare works with the girls to share her mātauranga. As well as grasping this mātauranga Māori the girls are practising the importance of resilience, patience and perseverance. How lucky are we to have whānau that can share their mātauranga with our tamariki. Ngā mihi nui ki a koe Whaea Pare.

Cheryl Barlett has been one particular student who has shown a high level of skill and dedication to this kaupapa. Ka mau te wehi Cheryl. We look forward to seeing you becoming the rangatira in this kaupapa.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN HERETAUNGA HAUKŪ NUI THIS TERM…

The Heretaunga Haukū nui team (HHN) are really looking forward to our trip to the Waiaroha Water Discovery Centre next week. This will support our new Placed Based study about the Ngāruroro River and how water is so important to us all.

The Kaiako (Teachers) in HHN love teaching literacy. Many of the tamariki are making good progress in their reading, and we are so thankful for the support from whānau that we receive. We have a number of Kaiawhina (Learning Assistants) who assist tamariki in different areas. We are celebrating support staff this week and would like to thank them for all the extra mahi that they do.

At our recent Teacher Only Day our professional development was centered around writing. Our teachers are implementing what they have learnt into their classroom programmes for our tamariki. There is a buzz around writing in all the Heretaunga Haukū nui rooms.

We have also started up a HHN Kapa Haka group which is taken by Nina, at Tuesday lunchtimes and on Thursday afternoons. We are looking forward to seeing the performances by this group in Term 4.

In the afternoon you might see some of the classrooms outside singing and dancing. We are loving the fine, warm afternoons and it is great to see some of the Whānau joining in! You are more than welcome!

Soccer and Rugby Posts

Over the school holidays we dug out the old equipment and we have almost completed the installation of the new equipment. We are keen to get this ready as the junior sport winter season has just begun. Our barefoot foot rugby team will start playing in week 7. It is fantastic to see the number of students who are now playing on the field using the new equipment.
