Sports

All students of Hastings Boys' High School are encouraged to get involved in the sporting opportunities offered at school to enhance their personnel growth and development.  All year levels can compete along side and against their peers. Highly skilled and talented students can challenge themselves by playing at higher levels.

Achieving excellence and winning are important goals at Hastings Boys' High School.  As important is the school's commitment to improving both team and individual performances as we work hard to take an athlete centred approach to students' sporting development.  The school celebrates their sucesses at assemblies, in the Akina Teamtalk, at the annual Sports Awards Dinner and on special honors boards around the school. Hastings Boys' High School has traditionally offered a wide range of sporting opportunities.  We are continuing to do this with approximately 30 different codes incorporating over 70 teams that are organised through school.  82% of our staff committed themselves to school teams this year which is exceptional when the Hawke's Bay average staff involvement was only 48%.

There are very few schools that offer the extensive list of opportunities to develop into fine young men as Hastings Boys’ High School. As a member of the NZ Super 8 group of schools we have access to the very best sporting and cultural competitions. The Super 8 group of schools forms the platform for Professional Development by the sharing of ideas and what works for boys. Over the last few years our students have had the opportunity to take part in the following activities:

About Sport at Hastings Boys'

Values and Aims

The essential ingredient at Hastings Boys' High School is that we look to set clear strategic, measurable targets & goals to extend students to achieve excellence in their sporting, academic and personal lives.

Key values and aims for student athletes are:

  • To develop students self esteem, self motivation & self discipline
  • To maintain a pre-agreed, contractual high level of academic performance
  • To provide individuals with additional life skills that they may take up their roles in society as active, healthy & knowledgeable citizens
  • To develop athletes' fundamental technical skills in their chosen sport to an elite level so they can succeed anywhere in the world at all levels
  • To identify & promote each athlete's potential so he might learn & strive for excellence in all areas of life

We think that these habits are invaluable.

These values remain with students beyond the school sports field. They are critical in producing the cultured, energetic and responsible young men our community & our country requires.
