Waiau Netball Club was blessed with a dry, sunny day as it welcomed the Hurunui Netball competition to its first Club Day since repairs to its earthquake damaged courts.
Waiau A were the first home team in action, with the senior high school players taking on Cheviot C in Section 2 of the Senior grade. Age and experience showed against a younger Cheviot side as Waiau ran away to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter, with rapid ball movement through mid-court from sisters Katherine and Rachael Dalmer (C &WA), combining well with confident shooting from Jaime Simmonds (GA). However the introduction at quarter time of Chloe McNabb at Centre saw Cheviot step up a gear, and with Rachel Leef at GD successfully disrupting the Waiau shooters, Waiau were unable to build on their lead with the score 20-8 at half time.
The Cheviot fought back hard in the third quarter and despite some steely defence and great intercepts from Hannah Ferguson (GD) Cheviot took the quarter 8 goals to 5, thanks to accurate shooting from Willow Forbes (GS). The final quarter was a low scoring affair with both teams visibly tiring but Waiau closed out the win by 30-18.
It was a clean sweep for the Waiau teams with comfortable wins for Waiau PA against Glenmark PA (28-3) and Waiau PB against Hawarden PB (26-10). Waiau B rounded off the day with a 27-12 win against Hawarden B.
In Senior Section 1, Cheviot A made it two wins from two with a strong performance against Hanmer A.

Culverden 23rd June
Frosty Start in Culverden for week 2 of round 2 but with clear courts and the sun coming out games all started on time.
First up for A grade was a battle of the club with Culverden A taking on Culverden Red. Culverden A unfortunatley playing with 6 players, while Red had the slight advantage of a full team.
A low scoring first quarter kept the teams close with The A team taking the lead 5-4. Into the 2nd quarter Red worked hard on defense and stayed in touch with only being down 3.
The third quarter saw Culverden A put the foot down and double the amount of goals scored by the Red team, giving them a nice buffer heading into the 4th quarter, which then Culverden A tightened up on defence and held Red team to only 2 goals.
