Graduates of drama will have developed a high level of confidence through learning about how to present themselves effectively to an audience. Our students are outgoing, self-promoting creative-thinkers who are group-oriented.
This Level 1 Drama course focuses on building upon the skills students have learned in Junior Drama. Students are introduced to dramatic techniques, elements and conventions and taught how to use these as effective tools to create theatre pieces. They will develop their acting and performance skills in preparation for NCEA assessments. They will learn how to devise drama, and how to interpret a script, how to perform in front of others and through different theatre forms.
Possible Career/ Vocational Pathway(s): (What career pathways are related to this course?)
There is no vocational pathway that wouldn’t benefit from drama, as the qualities and skills gained in this course are all oriented around communication, confidence and creative self-expression. Any career in the public domain that requires interaction with others, benefits from this skill set.

This course will lead on to Level 2 and Level 3 Drama.

Multiple short-courses are available during the year, mostly in Auckland and Whangarei. Opportunities to attend auditions for theatre, film and TV roles. Workshops are held at school throughout the year, by theatre professionals.
Contextualised contexts: (What local, cultural, real-life content is involved in this course?)
All drama involves real-life content. Students draw from personal experiences, cultural contexts, histories and perspectives to create new understandings of outer and inner journeys.
Teaching and Learning Approaches: (How will I learn in this course?)
Drama students learn on their feet; through games, vocal exercises, group challenges, improvisation acting challenges, role-play, and taking on leadership responsibilities for teaching their peers. The learning through drama occurs via feedback; from peers and from the teacher.

Students will need to have determination and high attendance levels.
