Movement Rehabilitation Programme

The Movement Rehabilitation Programme is a Ministry of Health slow stream rehabilitation and maintenance exercise programme for people aged 16 – 64 years old who are clients of NorthAble and have a long term disability.

The gym based classes are held in Studio 2, at Kensington Fitness and there is one Hydrotherapy class each week held in the Hydrotherapy Pool at the Whangarei Aquatic Centre. Class cost is $3 a session plus an additional cost of $4.50 for pool entry to the Aquatic Centre.

An assessment by the Movement Rehab Physiotherapist is completed prior to joining the classes to identify the client’s abilities, needs and goals and capabilities. At times medical clearance from a doctor may be required prior to commencing exercising.

Clients have the option of attending one or two classes a week, and are expected to make the commitment of attending for the whole term. At the end of the term a decision is made by the physio whether it is beneficial to continue with classes. In some cases the client may be able to self-manage their own exercise regime from what they have learnt.

Available for use is specific gym equipment to aid with strengthening, stretching/flexibility and balance to improve overall range of movement and fitness. Functional exercises like sitting to standing, and walking can be accomplished with the equipment available.

Currently the classes consist of Stroke survivors, people with Cerebral Palsy and a variety of other Neurological conditions.
