New Magpies assistant coach appointed

Hawke’s Bay Rugby has today confirmed the appointment of Brock James as their new Magpies assistant and attack coach.

James, who is currently Ospreys backs and attack coach, effectively replaces Mark Ozich who departed at the end of the 2021 season to take up a similar role with the Western Force in Super Rugby Pacific.

Australian born James had a distinguished playing career including over 280 games for Clermont in France before coaching stints with Bordeaux in France and then Ospreys in Wales. James is no stranger to NZ rugby, with the accomplished first five having played a season for Taranaki in the NPC back in 2004.

“My experience in New Zealand rugby was a very enjoyable one. After my time in Europe, I’m very excited to have the opportunity to be a part of a Hawkes Bay team that has established itself over the last few seasons as one of the top teams in New Zealand. I’m looking forward to learning from and working with the coaches and players who have driven the success of the province.”

Magpies head coach Josh Syms said ‘’I am really happy with Brock’s appointment, having been through an exhaustive search over the past three months, Brock was a standout candidate for the position.”

“Brocks rugby knowledge is extensive and broad, he is passionate about the game and will bring and exciting new edge to the Magpies game plan. With Brocks experience as a player and a coach in the French top 14 and the Heineken Cup, there will sure to be some innovation in the Magpies attack for 2022 ”

HBRU CEO Jay Campbell confirmed ‘Like the head coaching role, there was considerable interest from all around the globe but once Symsy and Brock connected and he discussed his vision for rugby, it was apparent his strong reputation as an outstanding skills coach, alongside his immense rugby IQ and innovative approach to attack play made for a perfect appointment. We look forward to him joining the Magpies management group.’

James will finish his season with Ospreys before flying to NZ where his family are located before the Magpies kick off the 2022 NPC.
