Magpie Coaches look ahead to 2019

Some might think that Summer is downtime for HB Magpies coach Mark Ozich and assistant coach Josh Syms but that’s not the case as they review the team’s overall performance; review individual player performances and start to put plans in place for 2019.

Mark says that it was a bit disappointing not to make the final, losing to Otago down in Dunedin in the semis, but overall the season was solid, especially with significant changes both in player roster, new coaches and administration changes including a new chief executive.

“There was a lot of change over the last 12 months both on and off the field and we unearthed some new talent and our experienced players also stepped it up.”

Mark and Josh have now compiled reports on all players which will either be sent out (to those outside of the Bay) or discussed with the players one-on-one.

The pair will also now look at how the roster will develop in 2019 and they’re very happy that a breed of youngsters will have a season under their belts.

“We had some young guys who were at school in 2017, that gave a good account of themselves and they will have that experience going forward while the older guys also can’t be overlooked for their efforts.

“Guys like Mark Braidwood, Ben May, Tom Parsons, Brad Weber and Gareth Evans performed well all season,” he said.

Going forward an area of focus will be in the midfield and utility players.

“JJ Taulagi and Stacey Ili are likely to be at the World Cup with Samoa and we will need to bolster the midfield and also look at players that can play several positions. There’s an opportunity for players that can win ball at the collision but also show some finesse on attack.”

Halfback Folau Fakatava took his limited opportunities to prove his potential and was rewarded with a Super Rugby contract with the Highlanders. Folau was playing first XV rugby in 2017 and proved to be an exciting backup to Brad Weber this season.

Mark says Folau’s performance against Canterbury was a stand out.

“The Highlanders kept a close eye on him during the season, after a heads up by Ash Dixon and it was no surprise that he was given a contract and I’m sure he will get some game time for them next season.

As Mark and Josh reflect on the season, they say that although there was a squad of players on the paddock, there were many others that contributed to the season.

“The players and us as coaches are grateful to all those that back the team. That includes the wider team management and support, the administration team and our loyal sponsors. They all are passionate about the team and enjoy the wins and feel the loses as much as we do. We thank them for their unwavering support.”
