Weekend Review: All leagues underway for 2024

Technical and United Top Southern League Table

Cashmere Technical and Christchurch United are the only sides with two wins in the Southern League (SL) after Round 2 was completed. Technical overran FC Twenty11 12 – 0, with United needing late goals to come back from 3 – 1 down to edge Ferrymead Bays 4 – 3. In an exciting finish the two top sides coming into the round, Nelson Suburbs and Coastal Spirit played out a 3 – 3 result with Suburbs scoring twice in added time to draw level, with Coastal then missing a penalty for the possible win. Nomads secured their first win when defeating Dunedin City Royals 2 – 0, with Selwyn also opening their account when edging Universities of Canterbury (UC) 2 – 1. Technical and United now have 6 points, Suburbs and Coastal 4, Bays, Nomads and Selwyn all have 3 with UC, Royals and FC yet to secure a point.

FC Twenty 11 held Cashmere Technical out for 15 minutes but then conceded four goals in the space of as many minutes, then went on to add three more before the break.  Another 5 goals in the second half gave Technical their biggest win in the league, with the lost FC the second-heaviest loss in successive Rounds. Garbhan Coughlan bagged six of the goals, Lyle Matthysen a hattrick, and a brace to Jack Hallahan with Tom Schwarz adding the final goal in added time.

Ferrymead Bays got out of the blocks quickly when Jame Deehan put his side ahead from the penalty spot in the opening minutes. Christchurch United’s David Yoo and Bays Satsuki Ito then traded goals in quick succession with Bays extending their lead just before the break when Joaquin Julve slotted home another penalty. Yoo got United back into the game when adding his second goal and ten minutes later the scores were level when Bays conceded an own goal. Rico Pradhan secured the win for United when scoring with minutes to play.

Penalties also featured in the Nelson Suburbs / Coastal Spirit game with an Alex Ridsdale pen putting Suburbs ahead with Coastal, who dominated the chances in the opening half, back on level terms when Auston Kranick scored late in the half. A double from Alex Steinwascher put Coastal in control with 20 to play before Suburbs scored twice in added time. Alex Ward brought it back to 3 – 2 with Spencer Barber scoring in the fifth minute of added time, from the penalty spot. The drama was not over with Suburbs keeper, Nic Van Hattum saving a Coastal penalty minutes later.

Angus McIntyre scored early in both halves to secure the win giving Nomads, who are normally slow starters to the league, their first win in the opening two rounds of the league. The Dunedin City Royals had chances, delivering several dangerous crosses after the break but no one could yet on to the end of them.

After a scoreless opening half Hunter Hine scored UC first ever SL goal on the hour with Darius Van Wyk levelling minutes later before Dan Ede put Selwyn ahead with 20 to play.
