Cashmere Technical and Coastal Spirit took out the team awards with Nomads United and Waimak United providing the winners of the major individual awards, Stephen Hoyle and Jayda Stewart being named Men’s and Women’s Players of the Year respectively.
The event - which effectively signalled the end of the winter season - was held at Doubletree by Hilton and was again MC’d by footballing identity Alan Stroud in front of strong representation from local football clubs.
Stroud opened the evening then handed over to Mainland Football CEO, Julian Bowden, who offered his reflection on the year before team awards were handed out for the senior competitions.
The Woolston based, Cashmere Technical took out the men’s MPL, MPL Reserves, Southern Football League, English Cup, McFarlane Cup, illustrating their dominance in the men’s game throughout the 2018 campaign. East-siders, Coastal Spirit took out the Women’s Premier League, Hawkey Shield, and McFarlane Cup in the women’s category.
Acknowledgment of the Federations’ National Representatives preceded the awarding of the Eileen Langridge Administrator of the Year Award to Selwyn United’s, Gerard De Rooy, who fittingly, wasn’t present as he was preparing to host the 10th Grade South Island Age-Group Tournament. Eileen’s recent passing saw a warm applause from the football community, saluting her contribution to football in the region over many years.
Ben O’Connell received the Referee of the Year for the second consecutive year, with Cashmere’s, Deane Hutchinson was awarded the Men’s Coach of the Year and Shane Verma - Women’s Coach of the Year - was rewarded for Waimak United’s solid season, finishing third in the WPL, beating both teams above them in the final round.
Fittingly, every individual winner in the women’s game went to members of the 2018 Canterbury United Pride squad, with Nomads united players walking away with the majority of the men’s individual silverware.
