Maranui water polo prizegiving for 2014 -2015

Prize giving: A small club presence were in attendance at our annual prize giving ceremony, which took place after the AGM last Sunday. Our guest speaker for this years prize giving was one of Maranui’s talents, Martina Burt. ‘Martina played for Maranui as Martina Zanotto. From a well known Wellington Italian family who have brought good Italian food and hospitality to Wellington over the last 4 decades. Martina attended St Catherine’s College. She excelled at water polo, one of the toughest sports, she was the backbone of Maranui and New Zealand teams in the late 90s and 2000s. Martina had a strong career in the pool which included a first win over an Australian Women’s team by a New Zealand Women’s team. In 2004 when she was playing against Hungary in the New Zealand Team there were 3 other Maranui women in the team -Sarah Pattison, Koren Wilkinson and Sarah Tan. Martina was one of a select group to score against the tough Hungary Team in the games which New Zealand lost. Martina also excelled at igniting the passion for the sport as a coach, she achieved success with several teams as coach including the Maranui Under 16 Men’s team winning Gold in the early 2000s. In the past Martina has also worked hard as a committee member, Senior Coach and Referee for Maranui. Martina is now married to Matt Burt and they have 3 beautiful daughters Milana, Nadia and Siena. We thank Martina for her exceptional contribution to Maranui Water Polo Club.’ Mary Crewdson
