Marlborough Dressage Trophy Information for Annual Championship Show


LUCAS TROPHY – Preliminary

Donated in 1982 by Sue Lucas & family. For over 50 years, Sue has been a devoted competitor, Committee member, & Judge [including Marlborough Area Judges Officer]

WILLOWBROOK TROPHY –Novice

Donated by Diane Wallace in 1996 as a tribute to her liver chestnut gelding “Willowbrook” whom she competed on in the 1990,s -2000. “Willowbrook” & Diane competed to Grand Prix and was shortlisted for the Sydney Olympics.

ANDERSON TROPHY – Elementary

Donated by Chick Anderson & family in 2000. Chick was a great supporter, competitor, committee member of Marlborough Dressage in the 80,s & 90,s.

JEAN FAIRCLOTH TROPHY -Medium

The late Jean Faircloth gave a huge contribution to the sport of dressage both locally & nationally. She was a judge & a committee member.

HATTON TROPHY - Advanced Medium

Donated in 1996 by Sharon & Lyn Hatton who were great volunteers at Marlborough Dressage for many years. Sharon was a talented rider winning many national titles, a local judge, committee member & they sponsored the Championship Show for a number of years as “Hatton Horse Floats”.

HERKT FAMILY TROPHY – Level 6 & above.

The Herkt family have devoted a huge amount of their time to Marlborough Dressage. Trish was secretary/treasurer for many years & is now the Patron. Liza, a competitor, both locally & nationally, represented NZ as a Young Rider, local committee member & delegate. Gordon a volunteer & as Herkt Retravision they also sponsored the Summer Dressage series for several years.

“BITTESCHON” TROPHY – for highest % in a musical.

Donated in 2001 by her rider – Sharon Hatton. She was the first ever Marlborough Dressage horse to win a National Championship [Elementary- L3], win at Horse of the Year [Open Medium L5] & win World Challenge FEI in Taupo. Bitteschon won many national titles in her career. Sadly, this very talented bay mare died very suddenly & unexpectedly aged 11yrs on 10.01.2001.

“GAYENDO” TROPHY - For registered Young Rider at the Championship Show.

Donated by the Smith family as a tribute to their successful small grey hack gelding “Gayendo” . Ridden by Rhonda he won titles both locally & National Young rider awards. Later ridden by her younger sister Cassandra.

VAUSE TROPHY - for Registered pony with the most points at the Championship Show.

The late Ruth Vause was a competitor & also president of Marlborough Dressage in the late 1980’s.

INISHMORE FIONNE TROPHY - for young Dressage Horse at the Championship show.

Donated by Kathryn Cawte as a tribute to “Fionne”, her talented chestnut mare winner of young dressage horse awards & successful to Elementary level. Then retired due to injury & then produced 3 foals.

FAIRCLOTH TROPHY - for most points by a Marlborough Rider at the Championship show.

The Faircloth family were great supporters of Dressage in Marlborough in the 1960’s & 70’s. Jean, a judge, her husband Noel an instructor, daughters Celia, Sally, Judith & Nikky as local competitors in all disciplines over the years. On 23 July 1973 Noel & Celia were on their way to the UK so Celia could train to become a BHS Instructor when the plane they were in on crashed off Tahiti. Sadly they did not survive.

SCHINDLER TROPHY - for area team with best average percentage.

New for 2020 , this trophy was bought by Marlborough Dressage and dedicated to Louis Schindler. Louis lived in Blenheim and was a competitior and valuable asset to MD committee.Amongst many of his contributions, Louis singlehandedly built the original timber arena surrounds for the Marlborough Equestrian Park , and the trailer for carrying pipe arena. He also was event arena set up person, doing it on his own many times!!Although Louis since moved away from Blenheim, he promised to keep supporting MD and has done so by being our main sponsor for the Premier League championship show,with his company ,Syncroflex.

Winter Dressage Series Information

The series began in 1989. A training series developed by Sue Lucas, Biddy Ritchie, Sharon Hatton, Franzi van Bruggen & Ruth Vause to help new riders into the sport of dressage , current riders to train & have a goal during the winter months, plus judges a time to practise higher levels in the off season & encourage new judges. There are 4 monthly shows, best 3 to count for the overall series champions. Lead rein – to Grand Prix.

Lucas Saddlery donated the golden horse head trophies & sponsored the event for 26yrs. The sponsorship  was taken over by the Marlborough Equestrian Barn in 2016 when they purchased Lucas Saddlery.

One of the inaugural winners in 1989 was the current MD Secretary – Sharon Inwood.

Summer Dressage Series Information

This series is over 3 days , 2 in the spring & 1 late summer [best 2 to count]. The overall champions receive the Golden Horse trophies which were originally donated by The Opawa Riding School. When the riding school closed sponsorship was taken over by Herkt Retravision & now currently Dunstan horse feeds. Introductory to Grand Prix.

ROANOAKE JUST TRU MEMORIAL TROPHY – awarded to a young rider aged 12 – 21 yrs. Roanoke Just Tru [ TJ] was a lovely big chestnut X Bred gelding owned & successfully ridden to level 7 both locally & nationally by Sue Mc Callum. He then went to Young rider, Aleisha Deans from Napier who was 4 times Reserve YR at HOY & 3 times at the Nationals. “TJ” qualified for the Youth Olympics’ in Sydney 2008 where the team won bronze .Unfortunately he passed away in 2011 only 6 weeks after winning L7 Open Champion & YR Champion at the Wellington Dressage Championships. Sue Mc Callum presented this trophy in honour of his achievements.

WALNUT RANCH TROPHY

A new addition -2017- donated by Katie Stadler, a successful dressage rider and owner of Walnut Ranch - for amateur riders .
