The challenge of competing in the northern women’s premier league this season was underlined when Melville gave it everything but were still beaten 5-1 at home by co-league leaders Fencibles United.
Melville at least had the consolation of becoming the first team to score against Fencibles when Laura Bennett potted an 89th ,minute penalty she had earned herself when brought down in the box.
But otherwise it was a tough afternoon for The Unicorns, who were always under pressure against opponents who will be pressing for national league, with Alexandrea Ape-Paia putting Fencibles ahead as eary as the fifth minute.
The Melville wall went tall.Melville made six changes from the starting lineup that won their opening match of the season, 1-0 away to Western Springs, though were still missing a number of regulars due to futsal and school commitments.
Most significant change was the debut of Leonie Heck in goal for Melville. German-born Heck, who also a background in university football in the US, has shifted north from Palmerston North Marist.

Despite the scoreline, Heck impressed with a host of one-on-one saves. Elin Gainsford also came on for a short cameo at the end.

Melville had few clearcut chances, though Bennett was always a threat when she got on the ball in the attacking third and struck her penalty well to register her second goal in two games this season.

Melville are fifth on the table.
The match was watched by Football Ferns coach Mayney Mayne and his trainer, Wilky Wilkinson.

Meanwhile the Melville women’s reserves made their Lotto NRFL debut with a 3-1 home loss, in which Emma Meadows and Elin Gainsford played half a game each in goal.
Skylar Mearns gave Melville a dream start with a second ,minute goal, but Fencibles were 3-1 up before half time.
On Good Friday Melville are away to Ellerslie at 1.30pm (Reserves 11am) and on Sunday April 12 are at home to league favourites Auckland United.
