Brian joined the Nelson Farmers Market in 2020 and has been growing mushrooms for around 18 months. Brian has been a chef for 26 years and whilst in London he was inspired by the range of mushrooms that were available and that people would forage for them. When he returned to New Zealand there was nothing like this available.
The desire for a change of pace and his experiences in London inspired Brian to start growing his own mushrooms. Initially he worked part time while setting up his mushroom business and in mid 2020 took the leap to working full time.
Brian really enjoys the opportunity to talk with people at the Nelson Farmers Market. He enjoys interacting with customers and explaining the different ways that mushrooms can be used. Brian senses there is a bit of ‘fungi-phobia’ in New Zealand so really likes being able to educate people about mushrooms. He really enjoys knowing that he is growing something that is good and healthy for people.
