Downes named NZF Futsal Coach of the Year

Futsal Ferns Coach and AFF Football Development Officer Nic Downes was named New Zealand Football’s Futsal Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2017 Futsal National League.

Downes was at the helm of the Ferns, who were playing in their first international series and celebrated a clean-sweep in the Trans Pacific Futsal Cup.

He also led the Federation’s National Women’s League side and U-19 side to become national champions while his University of Auckland outfit came runners up at the National University Championships.

“It was unexpected, there are many other coaches out there doing great work for the game as well who are equally as deserving,” Downes said.

“It’s a nice feeling though, and I’m really appreciative to be recognised with this award.

“I want to thank and acknowledge all the hard work the players and staff have put in across the various teams.”

Downes paid credit to fellow AFF Development Officer and Futsal Whites Captain Marvin Eakins who has been influential in his coaching journey this far.

“He [Marvin Eakins] is the reason I started coaching futsal and has been a massive part in my development as a futsal coach.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have learnt from him as an assistant and have had his support as I’ve progressed onto head coaching roles.

The highlight of Downes’ coaching year was undoubtedly leading the inaugural Futsal Ferns to 14-0, 15-0 and 9-2 victories over New Caledonia.

The ground-breaking fixtures took place over three days in Tauranga.

“It has been a good year across all the teams I’ve worked with, and each one has had its highlights, but leading the Futsal Ferns into their first ever international fixture was special.

“It is something the players and staff can and will always remember.”

Downes’ next task is guiding AFF’s National Women’s League side to become back-to-back national champions.
