Match Reports from Saturday 20th October ...
MP Sporting Edge Championship vs Riccarton @ Riccarton 1 (1 Day)(Loss)
The Sporting Edge Merivale 1st XI played their first match of their Championship one day campaign away at Riccarton Domain and fell to 0-1 in a closely fought encounter. Captain Henry “privilege” Winchester won the toss and elected to bowl on what can only be discribed as a 22 yard highway. Clearly he’d taken notes from Ryan Hawkins last year at Heathcote (too soon). Riccarton came out with a hiss and a roar dispatching some short bowling until Joel Thompson (4) skied one to be caught off the bowling of Sloane. The next 15 overs were luckless for MP as Arora and Grewal put on a quick and streaky partnership of over 100, with at least 90 of those going over or through the cordon. Sloane came back on and trapped Grewal lbw for 26 but by then the stage had been set for a large total. Senadeera came in and worked the ball around for a well made 26 before being caught off Winchester (3-29) trying to up the run rate. There was a flurry of wickets as Smith (13), Mahapatra (6) and R Arora (8) falling trying to boom Dyer (1-44) and Sloane (4-61) around. But there were enough small cameos to help Arora to his ton, he fell not long after to Winchester, though our English keeper Ben Allcock can take the credit for a sharp snag. By this point the score was approaching 250 but the highlight of the innings was definitely the Riccarton number ten Blake Doherty hitting Sloane for a six so big there are rumours (unconfirmed) that it’s currently in orbit somewhere. In the end Riccarton finished on 254, which we felt was about par on a flat track and small boundaries.
The Merivale innings started in horror fashion as Mayo (0) and Ling (5) were dismissed by Ranasinghe (3-29) and Doherty (1-54) respectively. And a couple of balls later Winchester channelled his inner KP as he sold Hawes (4) down the river trying to get off the mark. This brought Sukhon to the crease and he along with Winchester slowly but surely set about rebuilding the innings. But just as the runs started to flow Sukhon was run out for 33 and Allcock (4) fell next after being teased by the short boundary. Fellow Englishman Ed Waind replaced him playing a busy innings of 21 before being bowled trying to up the rate also. This is when the fireworks began as Sloane came to the crease and reminded Winchester how to hit off the block. Both got going in a partnership of 50 odd. Sloane was dismissed for a quick 36 but he reduced the run rate and more importantly got a bit of revenge for the massive 6 he got hit for. Wilson (17) positively supported Winchester until he was also bowled. This left Winchester as the lone man desperately trying to get us over the line. In the end we fell short as Winchester was out off the last ball (ruining the red ink opportunity) for a sound innings of 93. MP fell short by 14 runs and in a tight match we will rue missing a few moments that would have led to a better result. On to next week against rivals Heathcote at our home game debut of the year. Massive match for us in the context of the competition and also a huge occasion being the clubs 50th Anniversary weekend. Bar will be open and runs will be flowing so come down for a watch!

MP Sporting Edge Div.1 vs OBC @ Edgar Mac 1 (1 Day)(Loss)
On Saturday we played OBC, the pitch looked dry but hard so batting was our preference. OBC won the toss and we were put into bat much to our delight but things got off to the worst possible start as I nicked off first ball to second slip, Gilly (3) and Srirag (1) joined me back in the shed soon after with the score on 14. Jonno was sent in to hold the innings together and with Ryan looking solid at the other end they put on a patient 37 run partnership till Jonno was bowled for 13 (54). Nabin joined Ryan and put on another 20 before Ryan chipped a catch for 39 (74). We lost a couple more wickets in a hurry till Robin (25*) and Mani (20) put on some valuable runs at the end to give us a score of 139 to defend.
We opened the bowling with Robin and Dave but with not much help from the wicket and some sensible batting OBC got away to a good start till Beattie(2/22) was brought into the attack to give us a double breakthrough in his first over. Srirag (1/19) was into the attack soon after and got a wicket early to leave OBC at 30 for 3, with the wicket suiting the spinners Sharma was into the attack from the other end and both spinners in tandem bowled 18 overs on the trot with Sharma (1/27) picking up a wicket and restricting OBC's run rate. Ryan (2/27) got a couple of wickets with his off spinners and Mani (1/8) got one as well and at one stage OBC were 90 for 7 but with their skipper still at the crease they managed to chase the total with 5 overs to spare. Good fight by the team but in the end we did not have enough runs to defend.
P.O.D Ryan for 39 and 2/27.

MP Little Brown Jug Div.5 vs St Albans @ Hagley 5 (Loss)
We had the honor of taking on St Albans at Hagley 5, the home of the St Albans Premier side. With big boundaries and a rock hard pitch, we were asked to bowl first.Milky (1-18 off 8) started again in great fashion, inswinging yorker second ball crashing into off peg 1-0. His new partner in crime, Harry Singh (1-18 off 8) finding good purchase off a length, with most balls hitting the sticker or the gloves. Both ended their spell with a wicket to have St Albans 27-2 off 12. Duncan Murray (0-18 off 4) our latest fill in, and Gaurav (1-34 off 8) carried us through to drinks, Gaurav bowling 3 maidens and Duncan unlucky not to snag a catch. Drinks 52-3. Things after drinks didn’t quite go to plan, bowlers lacking a bit of discipline and several shelled catches, allowed their no.4 and Captain to up the ante. They took a particular liking to our young leggie Brayden (2-57 off 6) who had listened to the early release audiobook of ‘The Complete guide to bowling the perfect Yum-Yum’ by Kyle Sloane, read by the dulcet tones of Rory Hawes. Sri bowled several tidy overs at the death (1-25 off 6) along with a self-preservation catch from Nick and a couple of run outs to hold Saints to 170-8.
Patto and Andy took first guard, with their opening bowlers either bowling good line and length or deciding to flirt 2 inches from the edge of the pitch. Andy looked to take the aerial route, swinging across the line of one and departing for 7. Paul Stratton took a similar approach, having been caught at long on for 7. After 15 overs we were matching the first innings at 28-2, unfortunately Patto (17 off 48) received a delicious seed which triggered an avalanche of wickets. Our innings was wrapped up for 66 with 14 overs still in the tank. Thanks to St Albans for a game played in great spirit and the opportunity to play on one of the best grounds in Christchurch. Also a thanks to Duncan and Paul Dearsley for filling in for us, we’ll have you back anytime.

MP Rebels Div.7 vs Riccarton Warriors @ Nunweek 1 (Win)
Saturday, the sun was finally shining again and great for getting some cricket in. We turned up to a pristine Nunweek Park with a pitch good enough for a first class game to be played on. I lost the toss and was sent into bat. We opened with Dakesy and myself. We were off to a slow start trying to play no silly shots when my eyes lit up in the fourth over and had a wee slash at one just inside the line of the pitch, chipping it nicely to the fielder at point ... out for 1. Next in was Rafe looking nice and safe as per usual, thumping a four straight down the ground before he was dismissed not long after. Flats strolled out to the crease and got straight to work smacking the bowlers straight over their heads and through the cover region with prowess and power. Dakesy and Flats toiled away till drinks. A few overs after the break, Dakesy pulled one to the fielder and was gone bringing in Timba for his first game of the season. Flats and Timba batted for a while until Flats decided he was dehydrated and needed a sip of bourbon and took about six strides down the wicket, swung and missed. Even with the sloppy keeping Flats was halfway down the pitch and had no chance. The ball was moving around quite a bit when Roosey strolled out hanging in there for a few overs. He hit a nice four before the ball ripped out of a rough patch, hit him high on the bat, the bowler took a magnificent diving catch with a 10 point roll. I said to Chris Hortin as he was walking out 'just hit the thing'. Chris obliged by smashing a huge shot over cover, one bounce, four. Timba meanwhile at the other end managed to get himself out bringing Sam Garder to the crease. After the long walk out there Sam knew what his job was - to hit boundaries. The bowler ran in, Sam wound up, Sam was walking back. Andrew Anderson looking relaxed, calm and collected waltzed out and fed the strike to Chris who was going nuts despatching the bowlers everywhere. Andy just kept playing sensible cricket while Chris who distracted by his wife's cheering was walking back after looking so good. Hamish was brought to the crease keen to prove that he was an all rounder, came out swinging through cow, four straight off the bat. Andy showed pure class and his timing was impeccable. Two overs to go Hamish unleashed a quick ten off the over. Andy, not to be outdone by the young fella at the other end smashed 3 fours and ran two in the last over getting the score through to 8/115.
We went in and and had drinks and discussed our total and as the pitch was of such high quality we knew we had a chance. We threw the new ball to Andy. Andy looked really fired up cursing profanities under his breath, steamed in like a raging bull, a big grunt as he followed through and the off stump went flying out of the ground sending the batsman walking back first ball. Andy's send off would have been the envy of the great DK. As the next batsman wandered out you could see him quivering. Andy stormed in for the rest of the over with fierce intimidation. Sam Gardner took the second over and after his golden duck, had something to prove (he'd prepacked the gear bag at drinks). His first over was magnificent getting the angle across the batsman with just enough movement to make the batsman fish at everything. This went on for a while when he put the other opening batsman out of his misery by clean bowling him leaving the score at 4 with 2 wickets down. We didn't think we would be there for long. Andy and Sam bowled eight on the trot each. Andy hit the top of off stump five times and was on a hatrick in his third over. He also had one edged to Chris at keeper finishing off his 8 over spell taking 6/15 with great support from Sam at the other end. Dakesy and John took the ball to bowl two more overs each before drinks. John's first ball caught the edge but was put down at slip. There was a bit of confusion from the batsmen trying to take a quick single, Chris whipped the bails off the umpire called not out and the batsman slid his bat in...not out! After 20 overs at drinks they were 7/42 and we felt well on top. We waltzed out, John bowled a few more before his athletic physique let him down and felt a strain in his shoulder. Hamish was brought in to replace him, starting beautifully, getting the ball on the spot bowling with raw pace. Dakesy's next over, he could see his lead on the bowling trophy slipping away after Andrew's bowling heroics, he decided to start up with the 'Julie ball' cleaning up the tail in the 28th over. Andy and Dakesy are now sitting on 10 wickets each after two games. Riccarton Everest Warriors were all out for 63. Player of the day was Andrew Anderson for his fiery spell of bowling 6/15 (8). Club beerchopping champion, Dakesy finishing with 3/8.

MP Little Brown Jug Div.8 vs Heathcote @ Centennial 2 (Loss)
A balmy day greeted the Div 8 LBJ team on Saturday, for the match against Heathcote Afghan Associations at Centennial Park. For the second week in the row Malcolm lost the toss (or at least didn't win it - same thing...) and Heathcote put themselves into bat on a fine looking, albeit reasonably soft, pitch and a highly energetic innings commenced, with both teams performing admirably. Heathcote got off to a healthy start, and their run rate was consistently high throughout their innnings. However, our bowlers stuck to their task, and were rewarded with regular wickets. While we were reasonably accurate with our line, though (only conceding 4 wides), unfortunately we tended to bowl too short, and were punished on a pitch which held up slightly, allowing the ball to sit up begging to be spanked. Which the Heathcote batsmen willingly obliged with. The end result was we bowled Heathcote out in the 30th over. But only after we had conceded 203 runs. Joel Singer was without question the pick of the bowlers, with an excellent 5/42 off his 7 overs. Ricky Dhingra was also effective, with 2/25 from his 6. So both teams would have been reasonably pleased with their efforts.
It turned out, however, that Heathcote knew exactly how to bowl on that pitch, and proceeded to demonstrate it. They bowled with consistently excellent length (although they did concede a huge number of wides). The balls they got on the right line, though, were delivered with pace, and the pitch got lower and lower as the day progressed. Only one of our batsmen got into double figures - Dazzle (Darren Leigh) with 31. With the next highest score being only 8, and 5 ducks, it was not a shining example of batting, to be blunt. We were all out for 78 in the 26th over, with only Darren's score and 21 wides giving us any kind of total. So a disappointing loss by 125 runs. A shaky start to the season, but the only way is up!

MP Identity Signs Presidents vs ECS Gold @ Edgar Mac 2 (Win)
MPCC Identity Signs hosted East Shirley Gold at Edgar Mac Saturday. Fish lost yet another toss (Must be 18 of the last 20) and Gold decided to have a bat. We opened with Towney and Zane (Cuddles) and restricted them to about 50 for 1 after 20. With Easts quality top order we were grateful that Towney managed to nick out Gibbs (7) early on I guess he's not used to facing someone of his um, er quality??. Anyway the second twenty started and gradually Easts started to force the pace with some quick singles and a few lusty blows. Ants and Bellsy then joined up with Ants (2/17) getting a couple then Fish came back later to end up being the pick of the bowlers with a hard earned 3-30 off 8. As most of you know Fish always puts our team first rather than his own aspirations and usually to his own demise so it was great to see him get a few as last year he only took 1 wicket all year. Pick of the Easts batters were Tom Music and his batting partner who put together a big partnership both scoring well with Tom getting 58.
When we then had our turn to wield the willow chasing Easts 141 we didn't start well. We lost Stocker (2), Moore (12), Hastings (3) and Brown (6) cheaply then Donut (14) was the first of our 3 run outs and it was looking grim. Amy Rendel was joined by Bellsy (16) for a bit of a stand to get us through to about 80 before the latter hit a full toss to mid wicket. Kim Minogue (One of our unlucky bowlers) then joined Amy and upped the ante by stealing a few quick singles/doubles before their luck ran out with Amy being run out for 36. Our third run out (kim for 5) happened shortly after leaving us 105 for 9 chasing the 142 for victory. Zane then joined Towney and decided to try to take the attack to Easts. With 30ish runs needed off the last 4 Towney managed 2 sixes and a four to edge us closer and with 8 off the last needed Zane hit another 6 with 2 balls left to secure us a most unlikely victory. Not sure really how we won a game that we never seemed to be in but that's cricket I guess. Congrats to Amy for her well compiled 36 and to Towney who, it's fair to say punched above his normal batting prowess to see us through with Zane.

MP (Pickles) Presidents vs St Albans @ Bishopdale 1 (Loss)
“Pickles Prezzies” traded travel for hosting rites this week, when we took our places at Bishopdale Park. Our opposition, a stacked St Albans side reinforced by all the bowlers they were missing for round one. I lost the toss and was asked to have a bat on a pitch which looked hard and bouncy but had also been used for two games previously, so wasn't unduly worried. This quickly turned to concern after five and a half overs of basically unplayable bowling served up by Eagle and RJ. Foxy being the first to depart bowled by James for no score. Hume joined a struggling Pickle picked up ten between them in the next 2 and a half overs after which Steve tried to hit a wide full toss over cover and didn't quite get enough again finding the hands of Hampo whom seems to have a mortgage on Pickle catching, much to the delight of Slam. Hutton then ran through the rest of the top order with top notch balls against Humey (6 caught Keeper Big G), Shooter (0, top edge to square leg, Rich) and Crimpy (1, caught at first slip, Flav). Looking down the barrel at 18 for 5, Brownie and Price did what us others could not... knuckle down and were selective on the aggressive shots. Shane being particularly thankful for some sloppy fielding as he moved on to 34 before falling to a top edged caught and bowled by Potty. Millar was not in the mood to muck around smacking a quick 20 then being cleaned up by a returned Eagle. Brad went on to make it a double when picking up the LBW of Skudz. Old man Muzz salvaged the situation a little, outscoring Pricey 8 to 2 in their partnership of 10, but when Muzz was knocked over by Hutton, giving him a well-deserved 5 for 20, the end was nigh. Griffen tempting Price outside off who drilled it into the waiting hands of Flavell, departing for 20, team score not quite 100.
Reverse the roles and it seemed a totally different pitch. Hampton and Alabaster seemingly untroubled facing up against Crimpy and Winz. Negotiating 11 overs for 37 before Browne struck in his opening over going straight through Alabaster (16) to strike the stumps. Mather started well collecting 9 then Browne struck again with a controversial LBW... 52/2 Robin James and Hampo taking St Albans to drinks at 73. Having lost Browne for the day, Pickle made the decision to bring on Wade to change things up a little, may have been a mistake when that first ball sailed over the boundary, but he brought it back when Hampo pulled the fourth ball round the corner into the hand of a full stretched diving Crimpy who snaffled an excellent catch forcing a very disappointed Hampton back to the sideline for 34. Gave myself a couple of low cost overs and had to remove Millar when James (27*) found he had a liking for the darts. Winzey offered to have a go when scores were tied, and should of been rewarded with a straight forward catch off Flav (6*) when he hit it straight to our fielder of the year last season only to see it spill. A ball later the game was over tapped around the corner for one.
A comprehensive loss based on the bat, feel we were perhaps at least 50 short from a nominal target, but kudos to St Albans who stuck to their guns and completed the rout comfortably. Glad to have had Potty and the boys on our turf and we will try for some redemption when we get to the return leg.

Match Reports from Monday 22nd October ...
MP Sporting Edge Div.1 vs Suddenly Sydenham @ Edgar Mac 1 (1 Day)(Win)
After a days rest we were back on Edgar Mac 1 to take on Sydenham on a hot day with the pitch looking dry but hard and having lost the 3rd consecutive toss we were asked to bowl. Dave and Mike opened the bowling with Dave (1/10) cleaning up the opening batsman with 12 on the board. The plan was to bowl short spells for the seamers and bring the spinners on early to make use of the wicket. Robin (1/17) picked up a wicket in his last game for MPCC before he moves up north. Srirag and Sam came on and restricted the runs while picking up 3 wickets each. Srirag gave away 9 runs off his 9 overs and Sam 15 off his 9. Ed making his 2nds debut bowled a tight spell with 11 off his 6 overs. Their lower order put a few runs together to take them to 94.
We were confident of chasing the total down at a reasonable rate to get our run rate up.
Ed and I opened up, after 4 wides and a single Ed lost his off stump to a ball that kept low. Gilly joined me and we put on 20 runs in quick time before Ben (2) was bowled by one that seemed to have swung late. Srirag joined me next and straight away looked to tame the attack with some aggressive batting, we put on 30 odd runs before I (19) edged one to the keeper. Nabin and Srirag went kept the run rate up and chased the total down in the 14th over with Srirag finishing on 42* (35) and Nabin 13* (16) to give us a comfortable 7 wicket win. First of many to follow.
P.O.D Srirag for 3/9 and 42*.
