Year 1-2 futureFERNS

Introduces Netball to 5-6 year olds. The aim is to develop fundamental movement and basic Netball skills.  The 4 v 4 game format allows players to pass, catch and shoot from day one.

At our Centre this programme is offered for six weeks on Saturday mornings in both Terms 1 and 4.  Teams are given a set game time of 9am or 10am.  Held outdoors at the Taita Netball Courts.

Schools enter teams, and we usually have 35-40 entered each time the programme is offered.

REGISTRATION & FEES

All team registrations are now completed through Sporty. Please use your school login to register all teams this season. If you do not have your login information please contact the team at Sporty support@sportsground.co.nz. You need to enter separately for Term 1 and Term 4.

We also help individuals to connect with a team if needed.  Please complete the form found here to register as an Year 1-2 Individual.

It is $180 to enter a team of 4-7 children, or $45 per person.

COACH (Star Helper)

Each team entered needs a 'Star Helper' (Coach) who has attended our free Year 1-2 Star Helper workshop.  The workshop is specific to the Year 1-2 age group and helps to get all our helpers on the same page so we can offer a better experience for the children. Please click on the ANZfutureFerns Coach Workshop registration button.

GAME DAY FORMAT

  • Warm up
  • Skill activities (one topic covered per week) for around 20 minutes.
  • Game of 4v4 Netball played across 1/3 of a court - see Year 1-2 4v4 Game Information brochure (at right, or below on a mobile)  Games are 2 x 8 minute halves
  • Warm down

Team helpers will be actively involved during the session.  Our Junior Coordinators will lead a group of teams for the warm up, skills and cool down components.  At game time, your team helper is an on-court support working with the helper from the other team.

EQUIPMENT AND PRACTICES

No practices are required at school.  All equipment (bibs, balls etc) is provided on the day, but we ask that teams bring a small first aid kit with plasters.  Uniforms do not need to be worn, however t-shirts in a matching colour are helpful.

We often get asked about the fantastic balls we use with this age group!  They are called 'Super Grip 20cm' and are available from Sports Distributors (product code PG844).

GRADING OF TEAMS

When planning the game draw, we do our best to keep teams of similar age/ability together.  This is particularly important in Term 4 when there are some quite capable returning Year 2 teams, and other teams made up of new entrants.  Schools can opt to mix up the ages of players in their team, or keep social/year groups together - whatever works best for them.

POSTPONEMENTS

If any of the sessions are postponed,  they will be transferred to the rain out date as noted above.  Any announcements are made by 8am on our facebook page and then followed up with an email to team contacts.

There are no defaults in this age group.  If you are short of players please just let your coordinator know on the day.  They will be able to help your team borrow from another so that no keen kids miss out on their game.
