Selwyn Player Development Programme update from Kiana Gallon

 Aug 2023

With great success, Selwyn Netball Centre ran a 3 Day, Year 7&8 Player Development Program in the July school holidays. Over 65 players were involved, with the assistance from all the wonderful coaches who put their hands up to help!

NetballSmart was invited to work on a combination of landing skills, strengthening components, and the warm-up to ensure that players could execute the fundamentals under fatigue, to finish of the week. A NetballSmart circuit using 8 activities, provided the opportunity for players to learn and practice each exercise, while coaches focused on the skill acquisition, rotating around with their group to familiarise themselves with the various activities to use in the future.

All the activities encouraged players to gain an understanding around why each movement patterns and skills are important in netball and how we can develop alterations to suit the players abilities. Each group was then given a creative edge and chose a station, using the NetballSmart resources provided to develop a small game/ activity and took turns at presenting back to the whole group. We wanted players to demonstrate ways of how their chosen movement relates too and can be executed in Netball.

All players were super engaging and willing to advance their netball knowledge from their coach’s support. To finish off the program, this was followed by a fun-filled dress up game’s day.

A special thank you to Denise Geayley, Selwyn Netball Centre Player Development Coordinator for organising and executing a successful program to support the development of youth Selwyn netballers. Events like this could not be possible without the commitment of the Centre’s. Netball Mainland look forward to continuing our engagement with centres to support ongoing player development!

This is a space NetballSmart love being involved in and wish to support each centre as the opportunities arise.
