South Canterbury Centre engagement, written by Kiana Gallon

NetballSmart, Kiana Gallon and Participation Lead, Lou Milne, visited South Canterbury Netball Centre and Waitmate Netball Centre Wednesday the 29th and Thursday 30th of June. NetballSmart facilitated a Player Development Programme (PDP) session attended by approximately 50 players from year 7 and 8. The primary objectives were to educate the players on the importance of the NSDWU and and fostering the development of proficient netballers who minimise injury risks by executing proper jumping and landing techniques. Players completed fun age-appropriate strength work, circuits and landing skills.

Subsequently, Kiana then delivered a NetballSmart workshop focused on tournament preparation for both U16 and U18 representative teams from South Canterbury Netball. The session provided an insight into player loading, and refueling through nutrition and hydration to assist the body with recovery and performance. This was geared towards the upcoming Tupuranga Championships, held over King’s Birthday weekend.

Wrapping up our visits, Waimate Netball Centre extended a warm welcome as Lou Milne supported several FutureFERNS activities. The community proudly embraced these initiatives, and it was heartening to witness enthusiastic participation from volunteer student coaches and Centre personnel.
