Celebrating a Netball Legend: Sally Paki Paki Retires from National Bench Official Duties - written by Anne Harrison

Mainland Netball extends its heartfelt congratulations to Sally Paki Paki on her retirement from her Netball New Zealand-appointed Bench Official duties. It is with deep admiration and gratitude that we acknowledge Sally’s extraordinary service to the game, spanning well over 30 years.

While our records may not capture the full extent of Sally’s involvement, her legacy is etched into the very fabric of our netball community. Her dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment have made her a cornerstone of officiating, both locally and nationally.

Sally’s presence at tournaments has always been more than just official, she brought warmth, camaraderie, and a genuine love for the sport. Her ability to make the Bench Official role interactive and meaningful for players, umpires, coaches, and managers alike has elevated the standard of officiating across the board. Her support of Netball NZ in this capacity has been nothing short of outstanding.

As a volunteer, Sally exemplifies the spirit of service. Often understated, the Bench Official role requires precision, patience, and poise, all qualities Sally has demonstrated time and again. Her helpful and informative approach, delivered with professionalism and grace, has left a lasting impression on everyone she’s worked with.

Beyond the bench, Sally is a true community champion. Whether she’s courtside at netball, behind a sewing machine crafting swimming bags for school children, or running the Nelson Housie Charity to raise funds for local causes, Sally’s generosity knows no bounds. Her tireless efforts have supported organisations like the Nelson Tasman Helicopter Trust and Hospice, and her volunteerism spans events from Mako rugby games to the Weet-Bix Tryathlon.

In 2020, Sally was made a life member of her netball association, a fitting tribute to a lifetime of service. Most recently, she was part of the officiating team at the New Zealand Opens in Christchurch, continuing to inspire with her dedication and expertise.

Sally’s legacy is not only in what she has done, but in the example she sets. Her daughter and grandson are now following in her footsteps, continuing the tradition of giving back to the community.

We wish Sally all the best as she continues her involvement in netball at the regional level. No doubt, we will be seeing you at the Netball Courts.

Thank you, Sally, for everything. You are, and always will be, a Local Legend.
