For the first time in Nayland College history, the Senior A Netball team qualified for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Nationals, earning the right to compete among the top 16 school teams in the country. With 260 school A teams nationwide vying for these limited spots, simply making it to Nationals was an incredible achievement that reflected the talent, determination, and growth of South Island netball.
Competing against the best schools in New Zealand was an unforgettable experience. The standard of play was exceptional, and facing the North Island teams, known for their physicality and flair, required the Nayland players to adapt quickly. There were several close and hard-fought games, particularly early in the tournament. The team’s goal was to make the top eight, and they came agonisingly close—just two goals short after a narrow loss to Scots College in pool play. A draw or a win in that match would have secured a place in the top-eight bracket.
Missing out by such a small margin was difficult, and it took real resilience for the players to regroup and refocus. In the end, Nayland College finished 14th overall. Although not the result the team had hoped for, it remains an achievement to be immensely proud of. Qualifying for and competing at Nationals in their first-ever appearance marked a huge milestone for Nayland College and a proud moment for South Island netball.
With many Year 13 students in the team, the tournament represented both an ending and a celebration of years of commitment, friendship, and love for the game. Representing the South Island at Nationals was an honour, and the experience has set a new benchmark for Nayland netball in the years ahead.
