The philosophy of FutureFERNS written by Lauren Burden

In 2012, Netball New Zealand undertook a review of junior netball and reached an important conclusion: children are not mini adults. Their needs, abilities and development stages are unique, and their netball needed to cater to that.

From there, modified versions of netball were introduced to better support our young players, enhance coaching, and make umpiring more accessible. Now, we have FutureFERNS - the Junior Netball programme, designed to foster the growth and development of young Netballers in New Zealand.

The philosophy of FutureFERNS, although often forgotten, is important for us as kaitiaki of children's sporting experiences. Here are three easy aspects to get you started.

  1. It's a game that grows with the players. FutureFERNS adapts to the developmental stage of each age group. The formats are designed specifically to match the child's ability. It may not mirror conventional netball, but it allows for learning, fun and maximum participation.
  2. Learning is player-centred. The adapted game allows for more touches, more passes, more shots, and more fun. They learn by playing their game - limit feedback and instructions where possible.
  3. Equal opportunity for all. Early specialisation can have negative effects on our tamariki. Let them explore the different playing positions to not only figure out their favourite bib, but to build physical literacy skills across the board.
