🏆 Back-to-Back Champions: Mainland NNL Make History 🏆- written by Jane Fourace-Wilson

The Mainland NNL team has etched its name into the history books forthe first time in Mainland, securing back-to-back National Netball League titles in a powerful display of consistency, connection, and high-performance netball.

This achievement is more than just silverware — it is a reflection of a programme built on strong leadership and a collective commitment to excellence across the Mainland region.

A Team Driven by Leadership and Experience

At the heart of the campaign has been the leadership of captain Kate Littlejohn, whose calm presence, competitive edge, and ability to inspire those around her have been instrumental in guiding the side through another successful season.

Alongside her, experienced senior players, vice captain Vika Koloto,  Sienna Stowers Smith, Te Ata Hassan, and Lose Fiangaanuku have played a crucial role in setting the standard. Their consistency, work ethic, and influence on and off the court have helped shape a culture where performance and accountability go hand in hand. Macy Costello and Aimee Hendry returned to this years campaign strong and focused and delivered when it mattered. Smantha Laing had worked incredibly hard in the off season to secure a call up into the team and made the Wing Defence bib hers throughout the campaign. Isabella Fiangaanuku, Ruby Duffy, Ruby Thompson,  Libby Crawford and Jean Taylor were also new to the team and embraced the steep learning curve into performance Netball. We also thank Parris Petera and Hannah Glen for joining us throughout the campaign.

Performance Built on Connection and Trust

Across both championship campaigns, Mainland has showcased a clear identity — one defined by defensive intensity, fluid attacking play, accurate shooting and trust in their systems.

The group’s ability to perform under pressure and stay composed in key moments has set them apart which was exemplified in their one goal win against the Central Manawa. Whether chasing momentum or closing out tight contests, this team has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to rise when it matters most.

Coaching Excellence Behind the Scenes

Driving the team’s success has been the leadership of Head Coach Geni Ahtong, whose vision and high standards have established a strong performance culture. Her ability to connect with athletes and bring out the best in the group has been a cornerstone of this back-to-back achievement. Geni went above and beyond to create and drive a team where culture, learning and performance were highlighted and celebrated.

Assistant Coach Anna Thompson has played a key role in supporting the team’s development, bringing a calm and focused energy, detail, and tactical insight to every session and match day.

The Wider Team That Makes It Possible

Behind every successful team is a dedicated support network, and Mainland is no exception.

Physiotherapist Kylie Cox has been integral in ensuring athletes are physically prepared and able to perform week in, week out, while Manager Leigh Hurford has provided vital organisational leadership, ensuring the team environment runs seamlessly both on and off the court.

Together, this support group has helped create a professional, connected environment where athletes can focus on performing at their best.

Inspiring the Future

We hope that young athletes across the region can look to this team as proof of what is possible through hard work, resilience, and belief.

A Legacy of Excellence

Back-to-back championships are never easy — they are earned through consistency, connection, and an unwavering commitment to standards.

For this Mainland NNL team, the legacy is now set. They have raised the bar, inspired a region, and created a platform for continued success into the future.
