The latest Sport NZ Disruptor Scan provides an interesting snapshot of the trends shaping sport and recreation across Aotearoa over the coming months.
While many organisations are continuing to navigate funding pressures and rising costs, the report also highlights the incredible value community sport provides. More than ever, local Clubs and Centres are recognised as places where people connect, build friendships, develop skills, and feel a sense of belonging.
The scan notes that affordability remains a key focus for families, with costs such as transport, equipment and travel increasingly influencing participation decisions. At the same time, volunteer time is becoming more precious, making it important for organisations to find simple, sustainable ways of operating.
There are also opportunities ahead. Strong partnerships with schools, councils, iwi and community organisations can help create more accessible experiences, while new technologies may support organisations to work smarter and connect with their communities in different ways.
For netball, the message is encouraging. By continuing to focus on local, affordable and welcoming experiences, our Centres and Clubs are well positioned to meet the changing needs of participants and whānau.
As always, community sport thrives because of the people behind it. As we pivot into planning for next season, keeping an eye on emerging trends helps us adapt, stay relevant, and continue providing positive experiences for our participants, volunteers and communities.
